Is it normal to want a pen pal?

So I dont have many friends. Those that I do get along with live far away. I dont really ever talk to anyone other than work colleagues and my girlfriend who I live with, have done for 3 years. But we arent on good terms at the moment. Colleagues I dont see as friends, just people I work with.
So this gives me some sort of urge to find a pen pal type of relationship with someone? Possibly different country? Maybe same country with the same issues as me? How do I find one?

              I mean sending gifts like that to prisoners. You could end up with beefy ex-cons showing up at your door wanting to demonstrate the toys you gifted them.
