Is it normal to want to have a pet duck?

So, I've been planning to have duck as a pet rather than cat in my house. Judging from some youtube videos of people having duck as pet, it seems that duck is the type that knows how to show affection and return love to its owner. I realize it's not one of the common animal to own as a pet but duck is so cute. Is it hard to take care of and worth the efforts or should I just stick with cat? Thanks in advance.

Aww, lots of people have ducks. Back in the 90s when I was still in high school I found a baby duck all alone so I took it home and named it Maynard. It didn't live very long but I wish it did :( Not really a pet to keep in the house though

Sure, plus you can eat it when you get tired of its love and affection.

look up and reas several articles of the cons of owning a duck housepet. Then read it some more. Visit some forums. And decide are these cons something you can live with day in and out for the next 5-? Years

Ducks are really filthy. They will get all muddy, shit in their food and water and still eat it.

One of our neighbours has a female Mallard pet duck. He's a jerk, so we talk to him as little as possible, but my understanding is that the duck just flew in one day from somewhere and she has hung around for something like seven years.

It's hard to know what's going on in any bird's head, but the duck seems happy enough. There's a tiny pond for it to splash around in, although she seems to spend most of her time wandering around the very small back yard, eating grass and occasionally quacking away for whatever reason.

Since it is an unusual pet, it's unlikely you're going to find any experts here, but there must be websites devoted to duck lovers.

I don't think it's fair on the duck. Its natural habitat is a river or lake, surrounded by lots of trees and shrubbery, in a group with other ducks, not cooped up in a house. They might be cute and affectionate, but being a caring pet owner means putting the pet before yourself.

This. People rarely think of the animals needs. A cat or something us fine indoors but dogs, and the like they require space.

If you don't plan on doing anything till the duck dies then go ahead, having an animal that takes to much time to take care of will just wreck any existing social life. Cats take care of them self most of the time so there not much of a hassle at all. i am a cat advocator but choose which makes you happiest!

I fostered baby ducklings and all I can say is keep them outside and do not have them on carpeted areas for a long time. Their poop sticks to carpets and it's a nightmare to get out.. plus they need some sort of body of water so outside is ideal

keep in mind ducks are really messy compared to other poultry, their poos are very watery and difficult to clean up. perhaps look into other poultry like chickens, however if you're set on ducks make sure you do a lot of research before getting one. they also need to be allowed to be outside, you can't keep them cooped up 24/7 in a house as they like to forage, swim in ponds/rivers (if you don't have one on your property you could just buy them a little plastic pool), and run around.

    I can't imagine a duck being a house pet.

But, you can never go wrong with a kitty! 😺

I hope outside, and that you have the right type of habitat for it. Otherwise no. You can go outside and look at ducks but they're not for your personal entertainment to keep them in your house or in your garden. They need a healthy lifestyle.
