Is it normal to work out with 2 gallon bottles of water?

I can't afford a gym membership but my parents buy seven 1-gallon bottles of water every week. So in the garage I put two 1-gallon bottles in my right hand while standing and keeping my bicep vertical then I do bicep curls with them. I would estimate two 1-gallon bottles to weigh about 17 pounds. It's not a heavy weight but I find this is better for building endurance. Using this weight I can do around 7 bicep curls with one hand before getting sore on that arm. I then do it using my left hand. Is this a good workout?

I guess you do what you gotta do.

No, it's crap, but at least you're trying. There's a lot you can do with just your bodyweight: push-ups, curls, squats. Pull-ups and especially chin-ups are going to build your arms.

Save up some cash and invest in a good pull-up bar, so long as you've got a good spot to put it.

Should be exactly 16 pounds (not counting the weight of the bottles, and assuming these are US gallons).

Sometimes you have to be creative to get muscles like Richard Simmons. When I was but a wee lad growing up in rural Mississippi I bench pressed a calf. It was a daily routine between time working the farm all the live long day. As the calf grew so did my strength. Eventually I was squating a 2,000 pound fully grown black angus bull....true story.
