Im scared to drive on freeways

Im 23. I do have my license, but! I am just intimidated by driving on the freeway. I will avoid the freeway when I can and take the street way. Is this normal? to be scared to drive on the freeway. Are any of you intimidated at all by the freeway or is it just me?

I pretty much refuse to drive the NJ turnpike. Its such a clusterfuck of assholes, and the last (and only) two times I drove it, I got totally lost. It splits up all stupid and if your on the E side but your supposed to be on the W side, your screwed. Welcome to new york, that's not where I was going!!!!

You're right about that!! I used to drive from NY to NC frequently and although going thru NJ is quicker, I started going thru PA instead because of the traffic. Nothing like bumper-to-bumper traffic going 80 mph. Seriously, if you leave more than a foot or two between you and the guy in front of you, someone will try to wedge in there.

  • Yeah, some people on freeways are just plain assholes. When I was on my Ls, my speed limit was 80 while everyone else's 100 and the nerve of some people! Tailgating, dirty looks, it's like they want me to break the law!

it can be scary at first but you get used to it thru habit, then it becomes second nature. driving on highways is like driving on any other road, you do your part by obeying the traffic rules, keep an eye on vehicles in your proximity and what their possible intentions are, exercise some common sense, and there's no reason to fear.

I'm not confident enough to drive on the highway. But I love riding a two wheeler on the highway.

I like the speedy driving on the freeway, but I prefer the back roads. More twists and turns and you must overtake cars. I love that. But here in Germany, the freeway is awesome. Smooth tarmac and no speed limits. Maxed out my car once at 250kph (155mph) :D

I'm more scared of driving on sideroads and intersections. On the freeway you have a lot of space...intersections can get confusing and you don't have as much space on reg. roads...then there are bikers!

Not really. Freeway driving is fun. Please don't tell me you're one of those people who get on the freeway going 45, if you are, you shouldn't use the freeway.

It wouldn't be half as bad if people were just a tad more patient, and thought ahead a little bit. You've gotta realize, some of the people on the highway aren't local and don't know where their exit is or what side it's on.

I feel safer on highways because there is less room for errors like people blowing stop signs and such. It's all a matter of confidence and knowing your abilities. I was forced to drive on a highway to my first job so I had to get used to it, I was a bit nervous and over cautious my first month or two but when you master it life gets so much easier.

I drove on the freeway for the first time a couple months ago. I had the Garmin, so I wouldn't get lost. I was terrified, but excited at the same time. I was laughing for about fifteen minutes after I got off of it just because it was a huge accomplishment for me. I'm 23 too, by the way.

  • I was at first but forcing myself to go on it repeatedly beat it. Today driving on the freeway is extremely relaxing.

Sometimes the best way to beat a fear is to just plow through it.
