Indents on hips!!!!

Okay, so I have sort of an athletic/ straight shape, I am quite skinny and my waist and hips are the same size I feel :( There is this issue I'm having with my hips! They have a curve or indent right on the soft part of my hips ( sort of where my underwear sit) and when i wear dresses and anything that clings to my body you can see this huge indent! Its sort of like having your waist curve in then your hip bone, then another curve on your hip!! it's driving me nuts, because I love clothing and want to try all these new styles but everything shows off this weird shape!! And it doesnt help that I'm skinny so I have no real women curves at all :( (I literally have no hips.. It's like I didn't grow!) I'm sort of like a 20 year old trapped inside a 12 year old boys body type :|

Okay.. I hope that made sense. GIRLS, if you have the same problem comment below!!

I have the same problem! Whenever I explain my problem to people they either think im talking about cellulite or my hip bone.A lot of people dont understand. Its so frustrating because my indents make it look like I am fatter than I actually am. Whenever I wear tight clothing it looks like I have a muffin top but I have the muffin top when I am naked also. It looks like I am wearing a permanent pair of super tight invisible underwear on the area right below my hip bone. The area of my body that is supposed to be the widest is the narrowest. My body just looks really distorted. My body goes in at my waist, then out where my hip bones are, then in (the indent im talking about) and then back out again where my thigh begins. I wish I could somehow fill in the gap so I could have a normal looking smooth shape. My indents aren't that noticeable when im just wearing jeans and a t- shirt but if I wear leggings, a tight dress, or a bathing suit, it is very noticeable. Its upsetting because there is nothing I can do about it. The only thing that helps a little is losing weight. I noticed that during my thinner stages my indents are less noticeable because when there is less fat on my hip bone, the indent isn't as drastic. I wonder if my indents are caused from wearing tight underwear and pants when I was a kid. Maybe as I grew, my body just permanently became the shape of my body with the tight pants on. Just like when people wear corsets or bind their feet. Skin, fat, and muscle are pretty soft so, I feel like these tissues can very easily be shaped by repetitively wearing tight clothes.

I started searching this problem because it has always bothered me and now it seems like it is getting worse, to me anyway. I wanted to reply to your idea about having shaped it w/tight clothes when you were younger. I really hate to rain on your parade, but when I was younger I always wore clothing that was way to big for me and I have the same problem. On the plus side though, my husband has always been very open about stating his admiration for my body, so maybe we are just nit-picking ourselves?

I know exactly what you mean i swear i have said exactly what you wrote to myself before, iv cimplained to my mum about it before & she said imt undies are too tight but u said its like that nakid .. Anyway i have a tempory cure for when you go out & want to wear a tight skirt or bodycon dress.. This is going to sound crazey haha but it worked for me, as you said you wish you could somehow fill the gap to have a normal looking smooth shape.. Thats what i did.. With undies.. Not the sort that. Are suppost to suck you in but "sexy" ones hard to explain they are frilly and kind of have layers, like a layer of frills overlapped by another layer of frill , by another etc. i bought a size or 2 larger than what i needed so i could bunch them up in the gap! It creates a smooth shape believe it or not haha & not noticable sounds so stupid but try it :)

I know! I'm wondering if it could be from wearing to tight of pants? Cause it curves in right where the pants/undies sit. It sucks!

A similar question was asked few days ago. I'll just re-post my answer.
    ----
I'm going to quote Richard Feynman here, from the book 'Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!':

"Then she had another worry: she's got "dents" near her groin. I had to get out a book of anatomy to show her that it's the attachment of the muscles to the ilium, and to explain to her that you can't see these dents on everybody; to see them, everything must be just right, in perfect proportion, like she was. I learned from her that every woman is worried about her looks, no matter how beautiful she is."

Of course, the quote is taken out of context, but I couldn't put it better than Feynman. So there you have it, you're perfectly normal. You even have a better shape than other girls.

I know this post is probably super old by now but I just wanted to add - ME TOO! I'm about a size 8 (UK) and a small one at that and I have always hated this problem. Between my waist that goes in and then my hips that start to go out.... but then go back in and back out, I look like a friggin roller coaster and I am 23 so my growing days are well and truly over. I used to wear quite tight hipster jeans as a kid and always blamed this which filled me with anger and regret every time I saw myself in a mirror. I tend to wear flirty floaty skirt dresses to hide it but yeah, thanks so much guys! It's nice to know I'm not alone :D Here's too hoping we start a trend!

I have the same problem! I thought i was the only one with these weird indents. Im only seventeen and i am skinny too. I thought that these were from wearing tight pants or underwear that was too tight lol. I wish there was a way to get rid of them:( it makes me hate looking at myself in tight clothes. If i find a way i will tell u guys:) i am determined to find the answer to this lol

I have the exact same problem. I'm really thin too so i really know what you mean. I feel like it's not the same as people who have indents but are also chubby because it's not like having a permenant muffin top it's like you don't have enough fat/muscle/or something on your hips so your hip bones just jut out and look really sharp. I have a nice waist and bum but my lack of hips just fucks up the whole image. Oh well it atleast makes me feel better to know other people have this problem too.

EVERYONE has this. its not visible on all females because some are thicker than others. I have it, and I work out and have a dancers body so its a small indention right on the frontal hip area. It is caused by the normal bone structure. Dont worry.

I have very prominent hip and femur bones. I call it a double curve... No hour glass... I have a nice body. Honestly, naked, I think it looks pretty good. However the moment I put on specific clothing, my wide pelvic bones give me a 'muffin top' even though I've got a very proper weight and even muscular.

I recently had some work done on my armpits to remove excess tissue, and I talked to them about it. If you really want it fixed, you can hire a surgeon to take fat out of another area of your body to fill in the 'gap'. I may be considering it...

My dream is to be able to wear a tight dress and not have it look like utter crap... :/

Hey ladies! I'm 18 5'8 9 stone 1 and I have these hip indents too! it's nothing to do with tight underwear so don't fool yourselves ;) basically we have high hips (also meaning we are blessed with long legs) and so our torsos are much shorter, it would look weird if our hips were wider!! I'd personally rather have long legs than wide hips especially when we're older! But what I've found to help enormously is weight training! I've been working out squatting 80kg, deadlifts, hip thrusts, step ups, reverse lunges etc and although they are still there, I'm more toned and the indent is less prominent! Thought I'd also say that Jen Selter has these indent as well , so I really wouldn't worry !

YES YES YES YES!!!! I'm so glad I finally googled this. I thought I was the only one.

Yes, my hips are way higher than normal but I just figured it was because I was tall and had long legs.

Ugh, I feel all of y'all. Waist goes in, Hip bones (anterior superior iliac spine) go out and are very prominent just a thin layer of skin over the hip bone, then it goes in again at the trochanteric depression, then out again near the top of the thigh at the greater trochanter of the femur. Like others have said, it's noticeable when naked too!

Seriously a permanent muffin top/roller coaster of curves down there, thanks genetics!! No matter how loose my pants or bottoms are, if I'm wearing a thin shirt or tight shirt boom love handles on display. So nice to hear that this is more of a bone structure variance than me constantly telling myself oh if only I did a couple more love handle exercises it could go away!

How tight of underwear did you guys wear when you were younger thinking that you might have caused the indentation unknowingly?? haha

Bodycon dresses or skirts, not sure why I keep trying them on thinking something will change, but hell to the no, bumpsville galore! What can a girl wear to Vegas??

Bikinis are the worst since it looks like you're just wearing too tight of bottoms. In photos I usually try to position my hands or arms to try to hide it as much as I can.

High waisted jeans and flowy skirts/dresses all the way.

I'm glad I know have a name for my problem spot, exaggerated trochanteric depression/hip indentation/hip dip! I guess it might not really be a problem now that I know I can never change it.

Love to all my hip indent girls!

So glad I found this!! I know I'm late but I had to comment - signed up just to comment. I have had these for years and I've hated them! I thought I was completely abnormal so it's great to hear other people have them. I'm 5'9 and uk size 14 and my mother put it down to wearing too tight pants but I could feel that the bone was the same shape. I was terrified to wear bodycon dresses but I decided to bite the bullet and do it anyway and tights tend to make it more subtle, not completely but as good as I'm going to get. Knowing other people have it makes me feel a whole lot better!

Alight ladies, I made an account simply so that I may explain to you what is going on with your bodies, from a medical standpoint. I came across this question while looking up something else and it frustrated me that someone has not given you an answer yet. BrandyLionWine was VERY much on the right track with describing the Trochanteric Depression, however in the situation she was explaining it had to do with a bit of extra weight and I understand that that is not what many of you are discussing. The reason you ladies have a "dip" in between what is your hip bone and your upper thigh is because there is a lack of bone in this area, which is called the trochanteric depression (depression because your skin will naturally fall in due to the lack of bone structure). Now, since many of you have stated that you are not overweight by ANY means, this leads me to believe that you are "blessed" with wide hips, a slightly larger than average ilium (hip bone), or a slightly larger than average greater trochanter on your femur (the bone that sticks out at the top of your thigh under your hip). While toning may aid in the loss of some of the noticeable depression (as BrandyLionWine explained), you ladies were born with naturally larger bone structure, so unfortunately no matter what you will most likely always have a bit of a "dip" in between your hip bone and your thigh bone.

I too have the same issue, however the real issue that needs to be addressed is that each of you needs to learn to love your body the way it is and be content with the things you can't fix.

I know I'm late, but I had to leave a comment; I have the same indentations on my hip bones! I'm not overweight but my hips are a bit high, that could be causing it. I'm pretty self-conscious about my figure, but now I'm glad to know I'm not alone. As for making the dent less noticeable, wearing high-waisted pants, loose skirts, and long tops works for me. I suppose no one really cares, but it's still frustrating feeling like I have to hide my body. I hope this helps anyone who might encounter this thread.

I'm so glad I came across this. I have always felt like no one has this kind of figure and thought maybe it's a problem I have (I also played with the idea of tight clothing when I was young but I wore baggy clothes). I am only 54kg and have skinny arms and legs and generally good muscle tone, yet I cannot stand the way my body looks in tight clothing. It's like a roller coaster! I have learned to dress to hide it, so loose flowing tops or dresses and only tighter tops if I'm wearing higher waist stuff that provides the smooth shape or if I'm wearing a loose open cardigan. I feel like the only way to improve it slightly would be to be really thin, but I have been as thin as 51kg before where I looked a bit too thin and it didn't make such a drastic difference with my hips so I don't think it's worth it.

My one trick if I'm wearing a really nice, tighter fitting dress is to use strapping! Strange as it sounds, I use physio tape and I strap it around my "muffin top" forcing the fat/muscle in that area in and down. It compresses the widest area and also slightly fills the narrowest area. Then I wear Spanx over it just to smooth it out. It's a bit painful when you have to take the strapping off, but in my opinion, worth it to look good in a tighter dress just for a few hours.

I suppose it's true that it's only us that really find this ugly and I just have to accept it and learn to work with it :)

Wearing high-waisted jeans helps. High-waisted anything will help smooth it out, plus it looks good and it's in-style right now. So that's what I do.
With skirts that cling it also helps if they're high-waisted and if you wear a light blouse that puffs out a little bit and tucks in, or if the skirts start at the indent and the blouse puffs out a bit and tucks in. Usually a black or dark pencil skirt is best.
Dresses like ones that hug your chest and flow outwards from above your base rib bone are in style and look very nice as well.
Long t-shirts, even if they cling, help smooth it out.

Other than that, I don't know how to go about solving this. I've dealt with this for a long time and I'm very thin... I've often thought about putting on a few pounds within a normal BMI to see if that'll help, but others say losing weight solves it and I'm already close to below average.

The permanent solution would probably be surgery. But know that other women look like this and though it may look unattractive to you, to others, it doesn't.
If you want to boost your self confidence, you can do what I suggested and it'll help.

I have the same "problem" and for a lot of years now I've struggled with my body image. I am a little thicker in the stomach but for the most part I'm in pretty good shape. I've spent a lot of time crying in front of the mirror after trying on body con skirts and bikini bottoms. I've even considered looking into plastic surgery at times (although I never followed up on that haha). But recently, I was shopping online at Forever 21 and stumbled across a particular model showing off a pair of leggings. Her hips were the same as mine! I had this realization that I'm not the only one with this "problem" because it's not a problem! Our hips are different and unconventional, but maybe girls with an hour glass figure marvel at our body type?

Some women do have indents that are characteristically and usually on men. I am not sure if when this occurs whether or not it is the sign of an underlying medical problem (genetic, most likely). Ask your doctor if it concerns you.

My dent is pretty prominent and just like you guys said, NO ONE understands when I complain about it! Lately though Ive been more at ease with it. I have this problem too! I'm extremely self conscious about it. And i think it has nothing to do with fat at all. I think our hip bones are placed higher up than usual. I was standing side by side with girls from my team comparing hip bones (because they'd never seen an indent like mine) and they were freaking out because my hips were way higher than the rest of theirs. Same with the other girl who had a less obvious indent than mine. But the indent is like hard bone (the hips), then the soft indent, and then hard bone (top of the femur I think) juts out again.

And btw, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about from personal experience. I first noticed this dent (the trochanteric depression) several years ago and was like, "WTF?" I went to a cosmetic surgeon and was like, "What is this dent?" He explained to me what I explained in my earlier post, and I realized that even though I was REEEEALLY thin (and always have been at 5'9" and 115 lbs) that I had actually put on about 8 lbs over ten years, and that my upper fat pad had expanded out and over the lower fat pad, creating a visible trochanteric depression. Since I had LITERALLY not exercised (beyond leisurely walking about 2-3 miles several times a week) in about ten years, I decided to take myself to Crossfit (google it). Needless to say, within 12 weeks, I had lost the 8 lbs of fat (I'd estimate five of these lbs were responsible for the muffin top and resulting "dent") and gained five lbs of muscle, which means NO MORE MUFFIN TOP AND NO MORE DENT.

Ok, I know this is really old, but I still don't think that's what they're talking about, it's bone, then no bone (aka indent) and then bone again, it's not a problem of too much fat. Ive had it since my hips grew wider during puberty. I have a completely flat stomach, and if I lay on my back, you can see where my hip bones jut out. The indent thing didn't happen before puberty, and my bmi got lower when I hit puberty than before it because of the medication I was on at the time. I think it's just the way our hip bones are set, nothing to do with excess fat in the wrong places.

  • BrandyLionWine

Sorry to get in on this way after the fact. The "dent" you are describing is called (in medical literature) the trochanteric depression, and people have various degrees of indentation depending on their genetics. What you are seeing is the intersection between the upper and lower fat pads. In a person at their ideal weight, this intersection will not be visible, and the dent will be absent or EXTREMELY slight. However, The bulging of the upper fat pad is what creates the "muffin top, and the "dent" becomes more pronounced at the fat pad expands above it. When the upper fat pad bulges (due to being overweight), it equals or exceeds the width and circumference of the lower fat pad (which is at the level of your butt), resulting in the boxy shape you describe, or even a sort of "V" shaped contour - where your actual butt is narrower than your upper hips/muffin top - (rather than the "A" shaped contour that is considered aesthetically desirable). If you look at the photos in the links below, you will see what I'm talking about.

    http://www.orangecountycosmeticsurgery.com/Before_After/Dr_Cruise/liposuction/224/4

To get rid of the dent, you will have to lose the muffin top above it (so that the fat fat is not protuding out above the trochanteric depression). To lose the muffin top, you will likely not only have to lose weight, but get down to a relatively low percentage of body fat (between 12%-15%). Either that or you can have that sh*t liposuctioned to achieve a much more hourglass shape. =)

That's not what we are talking about. At least, I don't think it's what all the others are talking about (went to url and saw the pics). In my case, like the 1st couple of posts, there is literally no fat. The dents are made over bone: 2 of them, that run along the top and bottom line of my hipsters undies. Looks like what happens if you wear a tight ring (on your finger) for a couple of hours. Only, the line doesn't fade out when you take it off. It's a dent in skin, not fat, over bone. I can hit the area with my knuckles and hear it. Pretty sure I'l just have to get shaping undies, high waisted ones, boyshorts (without the elastic band)or go commando. Maybe it'l fade over time if I stop wearing damaging clothing. Here's to hoping.

Glad your work-out went well and that you got rid of the muffin top though. Cheers

Pretty sure she wouldn't have any weight to lose on her hips if she has the dent... Possibly talking about something different? Because I have the same thing as she has described and I am nowhere near overweight... I'm a size 6 & have pretty much no fat on me, my stomach is muscle so losing weight definitely will not fix it for me lol I've actually been trying to gain weight. I thought leg exercises might build the muscle up around my thighs & hips & make it a bit more curvy instead of a dent. I have been trying this for a little while & I think it has helped a bit :) so skinny girls try doing squats & other exercises like that! :)
I have read elsewhere that these kinds of hips are "child bearing hips" lol but who knows

This post is probably really old but I know EXACTLY what you're saying. I have a really small waist and a little bit of a stomach, then the indent thing. I'm 13 so I'm hoping that it might fill out or something but I doubt it. I hate going swimming because I feel like it's so much more noticeable. I've found if you wear tankinis it's a little less noticable, or high waisted swimsuit bottoms and a bikini top. :P

It could just be because your thin. I have some but I think they're scoliosis related. To rule it out, bend over and have someone trace your spine.

are you talking about hip bones? they're natural. I'm sure wearing darker colored pants, dresses, or skirts can make them less noticeable, I doubt other people really notice. although I'd want more prominent hip bones myself.

Noo not the hip bones, I wish I had more prominent hip bones as well! It's like beneath the hipbone, the soft part. It looks like I curve in at the waist and then my hip bone curves out and then I curve in again just under the hip bone (So its not a nice, smooth hour glass shape). Its so hard to explain it without actually seeing it! :)
