Is affirmative action a good thing?

I was wondering what the is it normal community thought of affirmative action. Affirmative action are policies that take race, religion, and gender into consideration when accepting applications for colleges or jobs.

Yes. It allows for diverse schools. 18
No. It rewards people based on factors that aren't relevant. 42

I do not believe in Affirmative Action because I do not believe that it is fair for everyone. Affirmative action IS, in and of itself, discrimination and it pressures employees to look into factors that DO NOT MATTER in regards to hiring employees.

If you want to talk about equal opportunity, TRUE equal opportunity, nix all of those factors (sex, race and religion) and look at the qualifications. Only the qualifications. This will ensure that people get the interview and the consideration based upon their MERIT, NOT because an employer feels pressured by government regulations.

I believe that affirmative action's policies should loosen up on schools and employees. While, if completely discontinued, it would cause discrimination to a degree, having it in such full force is simply detrimental to people who genuinely work hard to get the position that they applied for. In a perfect world, the NAACP and organizations to help prevent hiring prejudice would not be necessary however this is not a perfect world.

In addition, I do not believe that an employer should have to accommodate religion. If your religion prohibits you from fulfilling all necessary duties, you should find a different job. Period.

I think the opposite. I don't believe race, religion, age or gender should be a factor either as an "affirmative" thing or as a discriminatory thing.

There's been a recent move to not include age on CVs. You could go further and not show name (i.e. Mushtar Iqbal and Jennifer Brookes are clues to race, religion and gender) but this just pushes the problem to the next stage (the interview stage).

In any human process there are no methods which prevent people being discriminatory for the wrong reason.

This. How about rather than affirmative action we just don't discriminate?

Wouldn't it be lovely to live in that kind of world? Where we are only judged on the things that are relevant to the reason we are being judged. Where at an interview, the only and only question is how well can this person do the job. Not that they're in a wheelchair or that they didn't wear a short skirt or that they will always take off a certain day to celebrate Diwali or that they are female, of childbearing age, and are trying for a baby.

I honestly wonder if it's certain things like that preventing me from getting a job. I take out my piercings and cover my tattoos of course... but I still have the crazy haircut. :/

It's either that or the disorderly conduct on my record, but I'll get an interview, do great, get a second interview, they seem really impressed with me and want to hire me, tell me they'll call in a day or two... and nada. Nothin. Zip. >.< Haven't even been applying as much as I should I'm getting so discouraged.

Hah, that disorderly makes an interesting story. I wonder if I should make a post out of it. "IIN my roomates held me hostage". Don't ask how I'm the one who got charged, I still can't figure it out really.

I like the crazy haircut. :P

I left my last employer under a bit of a cloud and unbeknownst to me, they'd been giving me dreadful references so that I'd stay jobless and then eventually crawl back to them (they were always writing, trying to persuade me back).

I worked out it must be the references so the next interview I went to, when they asked me why I left my last job, I spent five minutes telling them what had happened and that my past employer were trying to re-employ me. When they got a reference (by phone) they sensed it was a lie and they employed me straight away.

Not saying it will work for you to explain yourself in the first interview but if you do, and then get a second, you've finally got a proper chance of getting the job. Employers don't like unearthing things about people but they do very much like transparent people who explain things in advance.

Keep your chin up, yeah? Whoever ends up employing you will be lucky to have you.

I think it's unfair, nowadays, for some colleges to offer scholarships just for being a certain race with no real underlying merit. Some things in life just shouldn't be taken into account at all.

    It's racism.

South Africa is becoming a place where you can only get a job if you're black. (Even though the blacks here are generally lazy and always get the LOWEST scores) Merit is worth nothing here anymore.

Affirmative action is racism! Favoring any race over another should be considered racism and is never okay, no matter which race is being favored.

It's a good thing! Why should we take test scores or extracurricular activities into account when we could take their race or religion into it!
Why should we reward people based on their race instead of their merit?
I wonder who came up with this flawed system in the first place.
