Im 43 and due to a seriously hard life as a teen with motocross and BMX freestyle and all the broken bones and brusing crashing brings i feel 73 in body but still 23 in mind. My body really aches in the cold weather, i also have prolapsed discs in my lower back as every job ive had has been heaverly labouring. So, its my thinking its how you live your life as to how you feel.
I'd say that it depends on the person but generally, I think it's a mental thing.
Based on my experience alone, I have known 40 year olds that could easily be considered "old" (they're constantly ill, pessimistic, overly stressed etc.) And 50-80 year olds who are more lively than 35 year olds that I know.
I think that the way people handle life and stress plays a considerable role in how much they age, physical factors aside. I have a friend who is 38 and she has health problems that usually don't start affecting people until they're considerably older and I don't believe it to be a coincidence that her life is stressful and that she handles stress poorly. That's typically what I see when I see younger people dealing with stress related health problems - they age more quickly, succumb to illness more easily and they have trouble handling stress.
Now, whether it's that they're lives are too stressful or they handle the stress too poorly that causes the issue, I can't say but I truly believe that the mental aspect of aging is as important, if not sometimes MORE important, than the physical.
I think that the ageing process can depend a lot on how you treat your body, & also attitude. A lot of people are old long before their chronological age say so, & some people a re strong & fit in their 80`s. I think that attitude strongly influences how fast or slow you age,
