Is getting older all that great?

Is getting older all that great? I’ve always been told “life gets better as you get older” but honestly it seems very crappy.

Everything seems to just be very sad or depressing in some form

Life honestly gets better 5
Life is relatively the same 11
It’s not that bad 5
It’s kinda bad 5
It’s a drag 8

    It depends.

For me life has gotten steadily better as I've gotten older.

However, I have got what I wanted out of life, for the most part. So I'm pretty happy. I imagine if you don't get what you what you want then getting older would be shit. I have friends who seem pretty lonely and frustrated - mostly people who wanted marriage and kids and never found it, or people spent their lives throwing themselves into the wrong career.

It doesn't automatically get better. You need to be on a good path.

  • You gain responsibilities as you grow older

So for those with the mind of a child it's not that great

For those who cognitively develop as they physically age, they see the ultimate value of responsibility

It all depends on your attitude as you age...

People tend to accumulate minor to modest medical conditions as they get older. So I can no longer do a number of things I used to do when I was younger.

At the same time I find myself appreciating life more - and creating more meaningful and significant relationships...

I also view that I am still in my prime wealth building age group... Now that I have learned more about what that takes and have passed my youthful ignorance on some things...

Life is only getting better in general, even if I have to change what I do now and then...

I hope to get that peace of mind one day. And appreciating life- I thought it was the other way round, that older people became more jaded!

      Also are you Australian?

        Solidly American.

However, most truly successful people develop this kind of attitude.

That always should lead to a discussion on what is "success". Its not just money... its a lot more (and some very successful people had no money - just had enough to do what they wanted to do: Mother Theresa is an example.

Napoleon Hill list 12 factors that make a person successful in his book "The Master-Key to Riches". Money is only a part of the last one. If you get the others down you will naturally have enough money (money flows to the successful like water runs downhill: there are real reasons for that).

I'd also recommend a more recent book on how to become successful at anything: "The Compound Effect": By Darren Hardy.

        Go fourth and be successful,

Depends. It gets worse if you made bad decisions. Also, fooling yourself into believing good things will happen becomes more difficult.

I'm only 25, but for me it has gotten a lot better. I actually enjoy having responsibilities, and I enjoy the privileges that come with them, as well as the freedom adulthood brings.

There are always going to be negative aspects to any part of your life, but I feel that as an adult, I have much more control over my life than I did when I was younger, and therefore life and adulthood are mostly what I make them. Of course there are limitations, but gratitude allows me to be happy with what I have and to make the best of it.

I've also talked to many people ages 50+ who have told me that the best times of their lives so far have been in their 40's and 50's, and their least favorite were teens and 20's. These are all well-rounded, successful people, too.

I also feel that the older I get, the more secure and confident in myself I am, and the less I care about what others think. To me, that's very liberating. I spent way too many years afraid to fully live my life because of what others might think!

I feel like some things are different and some things are the same. People always told me when I was younger, that once I was in my thirties, no one would care about my appearance. I'm not exactly the most attractive woman, and that's just my reality. Since the age of twelve people have been making fun of me for being ugly, and I was always told: "Oh don't worry, once you get past 30, no one will care about your appearance at all." Or some variation of that. I can honestly say that people are just as rude as when I was young.

The only difference is how it bothers me. It doesn't bother me as much, but it still obviously does if I'm talking about it. When I was twenty, I would burst into tears and go home and hide inside and write about it. Now if it happens, I just feel anger because it's still happening. I was hoping that at some point in my life, I'd get to an age where people just don't care that I'm not attractive, and so usually if it happens, I just think angry thoughts about it and then move on with my day. I'm starting to realize it was naive to think it would stop once I was in my thirties. Perhaps once I'm in my fifties or sixties it will stop.

Life gets better because you just have fewer fucks left to give. I'm 52 and I'm more myself now than ever before.

I cant wait to get old.
I always envy the old grannies I see outside in the summer just sitting around tables chilling drinking coffee and talking shit all day in the sun. They're really done with everything and can just enjoy life now and all the experience they have... Must be nice.

I really didnt like living with my parents. That in itself is a huge plus. Then when you buy your own house its great because you dont answer to anyone.

I just retired at 70, and while I miss working and get bored, not having the stress of a job is great. But one thing, being stuck home with the wife during the pandemic gets on both our nerves. But the one good thing is that my health is pretty good. I would’ve said it was a drag if it wasn’t.

On average you gain certain freedoms in exchange for the loss of other freedoms, but ultimately it depends on what you do and what coincidentally happens to you.

  • There is good and bad, the good is that you gain wisdom because of ur experiences , the bad is that ur health begins to decline (hypertension, arthritis, obesity, low energy etc)
