It's a common trope circulating around the interent, that Alabama is literally the inbreeding capital of the United States, and possibly even the world. Are there any truths to this? Is Alabama the most inbred place in the western world?

I had a good friend from the southern states either Alabama or Georgia.
They explained it to me this way, and I kind of compare it to a Spanish background.
Southern people keep track and consider people family and relatives for many generations and levels. She knew and talked of 3rd, 4th, and 5th cousins or even sisters or cousins twice removed. I'm not even sure I know what that is.
Spanish people have large families and we keep track for two or three generations easily.
But if you know and track generations far enough you'll find connections, especially if you grew up and your family has Been in the same basic area for generations.
So maybe the fact they married a cousin is only a fact because they know who their cousin is.
What you're talking about is more common in Appalachia than the Deep South. There are apparently a lot of moronic Pakistanis who marry their cousins too. NO BUENO!!!
Theres truth behind many stereotypes. In the deep south there was not many people it was extremely rural. In areas like that you are often related to most people in your town without knowing it. On top of that sometimes the only person to marry was often your cousin or someone partially related somehow. Nowdays its not really a thing because theres is more people.
Theres actually probably more inbreeding in west virginia and eastern kentucky and west north carolina than alabama

The real place of wide spread inbreeding is the middle east. Where in Pakistan 70% of the population is inbred.
The south as a whole has the reputation. Rural towns were and are usually made up of bloodlines that have lived there for generations.
In modern times it's usually accidental. (IE: They don't know they are related until it's too late.) In older times, southern rich families would inbreed out of greed for their property.
Tragically yes, it is. I had an aunt (By marriage!!! We aren't actually related technically.) on my dad's side who was a victim of this, and...her brother is still alive. Pretty fucked up honestly, but I guess he's moved on and changed? I lived with the guy and he never even tried to touch me. He did give me lots of alcohol with nothing else in it though lmao. I knew him as a kid too. Fucker still never tried to look at me. :)
I also remember getting changed in a car with this guy's daughter once too. We were trying to change into our bathing suits. He looked in the window at us...I think he MIGHT have just been trying to be a good dad, but it is hard to tell at times. I still went ape shit and started screaming at him. If it works it works! :D I guess lol
