Is it appropriate to use the four-letter friend-getter in public?

Is it acceptable to shout a "Fuck you!" at someone who has just debased you in some way, even if you are in a public place with other people [strangers] around?

Yes, almost always. You have the right to defend yourself. 540
No. It's best not to make a scene in public. 322

Sometimes an Anglo-Saxon swear word is an effective comment. And sometimes it's funny. Me and a friend invented a game. We copy and paste the text of a news site into a word processor and then replace all instances of "the" with "the fucking". Whoever gets the funniest article wins.

I can't remember my best one except it included the line: "Those fucking animals have now been brought to justice," said PC Rowlands, who was in charge of the fucking investigation.

However, to get back to it, the problem with "Fuck You" is that it has the simple reply, "No. Fuck you". Much better to dish out a pithy and withering retort that leaves no-one in any doubt of the person's idiocy. Even better if they have nothing in reserve but to reply "Fuck You" and you have a pre-prepared witty putdown to that too. You'll make them angrier than they initially made you, you didn't swear in public, and anyone overhearing will now be of the opinion that you're some kind of wit. It's a win win situation.

Yes. And then you say "and fuck you too" to anyone who looks at you funny for doing so. Especially if it's a parent with their small child.

Smalls could be about. This is a chance for creative and intellectual growth. Brush up on your Yiddish and British and "Portman" (Nat's fave curse: "Kos ommak" or "your mother's vagina")

    1. Freedom of speech.
    2. If parents didnt want their children to be subject to a colorful environment, they would have raised them in a small boring town.
    3. They are just words. what constitutes them as bad? the tone? the connotation? well then i guess any word can be bad.

That's exactly what I think! Seriously, it's not necessarily the word that's bad, it's really the way you mean it, and just pretty much the hubbub people have created about it.

I try to make each of these EXACT points whenever someone says swears shouldn't said in front of children or in general. YOU give them meaning and your meaning definitely might not be the same one we give it.

It's a healthy way of expressing your extreme anger, I think. Much better than holding it in and taking it out on others later, or physically harming someone.

Express yourself, it doesn't matter who hears the worst they can tell you is : watch your mouth or something like that because you can't get arrested for saying that....right?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Depends who's around... i wouldn't advise it around children - and tbh there are better comebacks

you never know if the person u decide to cx rr swear at could have a gun, a serious mental illness or both. id say its best to be safe and prevent a conferentation.

it depends on the crowd around you if there is a crowd.i mean surely you dont want to teach kids their first swear, plus for kids they subconsciously model older people so if you swear in front of them it makes swearing for them okay.
basically just watch for kids and maybe the old (grandma's and pa's).
but for me im a young adult so i would mostly enjoy it lol. would be interesting ...

If I do feel like swearing at someone in public, I'd rather use the likes of "Va te fair foudre", "Perkelle" or 「きさまめ馬鹿ヤロウだぜ」than English.

It might not necessarily be as effective in all situations, however. It requires the other person to not know the language you're swearing in, and then they might not even know you're swearing. Plus you have to be careful when going on holiday....

Having said that, I want an excuse to use "spunkgargleweewee" or "tentacled cockgobble" in public. *God Bless Yahtzee Croshaw*

as for "defense".... if someone is attacking you verbally... who says you have to stay there an listen to them? unless you want the fight

You guys are too young to know this, but uhhh...lots of cities have laws that protect citizens and children from profanity. Depending on where you're at, you could be ticketed for the use of profanity in public.

I guess, as long as there aren't small children, elderly folks or if it was a child or elderly person who did it to you, then you find a way to politely translate it into something less offensive.

Depends on the situation, these people have a nack of choosing spots and times - together with thinking they have you sussed , in a way where they think they'll get away with it. They choose their battle fields and slimely tangle their words so that they can just turn around and make you look even worse by pretending that wasn't what they meant and your some defensive fool.
I've been in that situation quite a few times and always end up wondering the same thing.
They're tricky , slimy but in reality a 'fuck you ' is probably the best medicine for them because even if they twist things up it will still embarrass them underneath.

  • i think its just fine only if you got mad at someone i did it and slammed the door and left i said fuck-you-bitch to this old lady who was working in the store because i have just bought a lottery-ticket and went out & gave it to my dad then went back in to buy me one when that old bitch said um sure you have be 18 to buy thos then i said that to her and never went back to the store or inside it

  • la_uva_mojada

I rarely would say such a thing to a stranger. Perhaps if some sleaze ball came up to me and just started groping me or something is the only instance that I could imagine doing it. Plus I don't think that acting trashy ultimately gets the best end result.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • bhan4

Yes it can be offensive but if these people are strangers you will never see them again? I don't care who i say it to tbh.

  • faquarl

Some people around don't hear the word "fuck" every day... I use it liberally, but I won't say it around my like.. ultra religious or conservative friends.

You need to take into account your face in public versus your face with this other person. Confront them in private - ignore them in public.

Everything is about appearances, scene or not.

  • I disagree with some of the other comment above. It can be effective in certain circumstances, however, I think it tends to be overused today. Try to find a different insult, but if a "Fuck You" is all you've got, then go for it. It is more effective if you use a disdainful tone instead of shouting it out because shouting makes you seem too upset.

it's not so much the obcenity, its the fact that you shouldn'tdisrespect somebody regardless as to weather or not they did anything to you. today i had to restrain my friend and somebody else so that he wouldn't get into a fight (ultimately resulting in me being 10 minuts late to class) and the other dude i was blocking his way to my friend and hes demanded i remove my arm. i said no, then he threatened to break my arm. this went on in the library for a while. i kept trying to get my friend to stop asking for it and tried to talk him away from the guy who was obviously ready to attack my friend as well as my friend ready to attack him. the other guy threatened me again.

the point is i never insulted or raised my voice to either of them, and when i was threatened, i simply said "i'm sure you will, but i'll let you hurt me before somebody else." and i even took the initiative to say "im not trying to intimmidate you, im not going to try and hurt you, i just don't want anybody getting into a fight."

SO PLEASE MAKE LIFE EASIER AND KEEP ON WALKING

Yes, I think you should let everyone around you know exactly what caliber person you are. Kinda like fair warning. I know I'd hate to accidentally mistake you for someone with class.

When F_ _ _ becomes commonplace and loses its shock value, what is left. It's the last forbidden word. I guess we'll have to invent a new one.
