Is it "cheating" to use drugs while write an essay?

Lots of people at college use caffeine (and other stimulants) to help them study for exams and to complete projects because it keeps their brains more alert. But what about other drugs? There's no rule in the admissions book about this.

I ask because, when I write an essay while I'm Gonzo'd on weed, I get an A+ . It's not just a coincident either, I've done it several times now. [I realize that my grammar's not perfect, but I don't bother editing this crap, I save that for the essays.] When I write an essay sober, I get Cs, and they're boring too. I'm not going to quit doing it my A+ way because I know it is MY mind that is creating the thoughts I type down. It's just a different part of my mind and it's a beautiful thing.

I would like to know what the readers think about the topic...

    It's not cheating because it's still your words and you are not practicing any sort of fraud. If it helps you write creatively, then why not. I don't think it's a big deal. Weed isn't a big deal, but many, many ignorant people will tell you differently.

    Interesting question. The highest IQ scores I've recorded were on lots of caffeine. Tested many times and it's not a coincidence. On the other side of the coin, some of the most interesting things I ever wrote were while drunk.

    But is it cheating? I honestly don't know. It's cheating for an athlete to take performance-enhancing drugs. If it's cheating for chemicals to make your muscles work in a certain way, is it cheating for chemicals to make your brain do the same? What's the difference?

    In my head, it doesn't seem like cheating, but logically I guess it is. I means I cheated on every exam I took at the age of 18.

    Wow. I'm a cheat. I feel a bit weird about that.

      Write drunk. Edit sober.

        That's exactly what I took to doing. 90% of the best things I've ever written were done this way. Actually, there's slightly more to my method than that. If I write drunk, I wander a bit too much, but if I write sober, read it drunk (and rewrite the boring bits while still keeping the same overall structure), then fine-tune sober, it comes out well. I need the drunkenness for creativity and the sobriety for the judgement.

          Hmmmm, good idea. Doing it that way would remove some of the need for self-control.
          I don't know about you, but when I've been drinking and I write something out, I tend to believe it is perfect just the way it is while I'm still buzzing, and too often I'll hit the "send" button before I have a chance to do the "edit sober" step.

            Strangely, I didn't register your username at first. I thought you were "howaminotmyself" because I always put you together in my head (as having usernames of five words). My brain remembers numbers. If I forgot someone's name or a word, I know how many letters are in it before I remember the name. Welcome back! Come back for your three year-a-versary?

            A thing I wrote pretty much exactly a year ago was written sober-drunk-sober and it got comments (including from you). I've been writing my next profile that way but it means keep having to judge the level. There's a band of creativity between 45% and 75% drunk. After 75% it doesn't tail off but I lose my sense of subtle. And, yeah, like you I always think it's great at the time. The next day it's uaually okay but sometimes I go off ranting about Hitler when I was originally talking about butterflies!

              I recently came across a Venn diagram someone had constructed about drinking wine, although I can't seem to find it now... Not important, I'll just tell you about it, it's simple. To circles: the first bottle of wine consumed and the second bottle of wine consumed. The intersecting area is dubbed: Creative Genius. I suppose you could do that with other beverages too.

              Your current profile solicits others to do something nice for someone else, it's sweet - I like that part a lot. What if you are now bombarded with PMs of people telling you who they are? That would be fun though, wouldn't it. The opposite of a strawberry would be a grenade. The opposite of a volcano would be a bog... at least in my mind.

              Thank you for welcoming me back. I guess I really am back in time for my third year anniversary. Maybe I should have a little party, although *looks around* it'll just be me, a dog, and a cat. Ooooh, but I don't want to wake them, they look so cute when they sleep.

      wait- it's legal for an athlete to eat GM foods to keep healthy, it's legal for athletes to use scientifically altered shoes and clothes, it's alright for them to drink engineered drinks, but engineered chemicals that improve performance are banned??? Always confuses me, that one.

        I think it's because chemicals enahance performance right now not forever while the clothes train the body and help forever. Not sure about the food and drinks though.

    No way, drugs will only distort your perception on the world, so whatever you write or do, is still an act based on the knowledge you already have.

    If you toke and can still do well, then i say keep it up. its not cheating if it comes from your own head, just make sure to cite what isnt. the weed is helping you to think more clearly by making you more relaxed. I know some people who smoke and do well, but I know just as many who cant function. I say, keep up the good work! :)

    Cheating no. Illegal maybe. Hilarious yes.

    Its like music or caffeine, they help some people. I myself have never tried weed, but I am an open minded man and have nothing against it when used responsibly.

    Niceee my friend. I alway do essays stoned. Escepicaly those essays that you gotta do connotations for and stuff like that. Chills me and makes me spot links and stuff easier. It's a good pratice my friend... keep it up... My friend.

    If it helps you write better essays and get better grades, then your school should be encouraging you, not putting you down.

    Good for you!You've found something to trigger your brain in a way to get good grades. In a "one size fits all" system called school, as long as you're not doing the weed there on the spot I wouldn't worry about it. On another point, there's so much pressure these days on young adults to go to college/university and make money and live in that suburban home. I'm afraid we're all stuck in a rut and don't know anything different to do. Well here's one wise tip: You can always make money but making money in what you want to do, rather than what you have to do is the smart thing to do.

    it's only cheating if you copy another persons test. And caffeine isn't really considered a drug anymore! it's in cola, coffee both of which are widely consumed nowadays! so no-one will really care anyway. and if there is nothing against it in the rule book (or whatever you called it) then they can't expel you or anything! and there isn't anything against cramming hard then you have nothing to worry about! (just keep it a secret though)

    i think its cheating because the essay is to make sure you understand it and can remember it whenever, so if you can only do this via weed, you need to work on your self aware half

    the only reason i get A`s and B`s instead of D`s to F`s is

    caffine and music(my school is a bit totalitarian on the "perfectly reasonable" electronics politsy; so i not following the rules)
