Is it it normal to talk to your hair stylist?

I have my hair done every 6 weeks or so. It takes 3 hours or sometimes even more. I take a book because I hate making small talk, and it's one of the only chances I get to read.

I mentioned it to a friend yesterday and she said I was being rude.

Am I? Does anyone take a book to these things?

Perfectly normal. You are the customer and you are paying for a service. There is no need to be rude to the stylist, but you are not there to keep her entertained while she does her job.

I’m not a hair stylist and don’t use them but I assume that if it’s taking 3 hours they don’t expect you to be able to talk or just stare into space the whole time. I’ve seen barber’s capes designed with transparent patches so the client can use their phone. So long as you are polite to your stylist at the beginning and end and pay them properly I see no issue with reading and highly doubt you’re the only one who does it.

Yes, I always say hello and am polite. It's usually the same woman who cuts my hair, and we do a few minutes of small talk at the start, then I'll tell her what I want doing to my hair and then I'll get my book out. Once she's finished I tell her how great my hair looks, thank her, and then give her a $20 tip. So it's not as if I'm cold.

My friend seemed to think that I should be talking to the stylist the whole way through.

It doesn't really matter much what she thinks, but I'm just curious to hear opinions because I would have thought it would be fairly common for someone to take a book in.

I would have no idea what to talk to a stranger about for 3 hours, especially given how awful life was over the last year. I would start reciting the internet to them out of desperation.

She might even be relieved that you don’t talk, she must be a captive audience to so many boring rants about her customers’ families and work dramas.

I think a lot of people talk to their hair stylist while getting their hair done. But I mean it’s your prerogative.

I feel rude for not talking to her, but talking to strangers is so awkward for me.

I prefer to just keep my eyes closed and enjoy the ride but alot of people take that time to get work done, like emails and whatnot. I think its normal to read while in your appointment, not rude.

It's not rude at all. You're really not obligated to talk to anyone while your hair is getting done. XD
