Is it normal - scared of old age, self destructive life style.

My only fear in life is old age to the extent I'm living a self destructive life style drinking a lot smoking a lot fighting a lot, don't want kids, don't want to get married, anyone feel the same ? I'm joining the army parachute regiment I'm not suicidal I'm happy with my life but I'd rather die in combat before 30 (I'm 18) then live to 40 its really old. I want to know if anyone is the same because I've spoke to family/friends about it and it upsets them so its not worth the hassle.

Old age is a privilege many do not get to experience.

Okay, I think it's normal to not want to get old, even normal to have anxiety about getting old, but to plan your death before your thirties in a bid to not get old... I wouldn't say that's normal.

I think the fundamental point you have to ask yourself is, what scares you about becoming old? Is it your looks fading? the pressure to settle down? Once you can actually pin point the fear, you can start to combat the irrational amount of time you think about it and actually enjoy the now, build on yourself, so it is more likely you enjoy your future too.

    Well, anyway, good luck bro.

Hunter S Thompson committed suicide at 54, I think? He said he'd wished he'd done it sooner. I think some people have to work really hard at being okay with life, especially at certain stages. There's an old saying, growing old isn't for sissies. I'm a big sissy, so I get where you're coming from. Especially the way old people are treated, it's genuinely daunting to get old and feel 'safe.' Squandering youth on impulse gratification will make you not enjoy old age. Love and work are what sustain the human animal, according to Freud.

I'm not really planning on changing but yeh I don't want to settle down. I know my feelings are a bit extreme but if I'm happy I don't see the problem I was just looking to see that I'm not the only one who feels the same rather then looking for a solution

I used to think I didn't want to live past 30! Oh, I was 18 at the time, now I'm 49, in ill health and want to live more than anything! I also lived a self destructive lifestyle! You'll change your mind, believe me!

I will be 40 next year. Have three wonderful children. They are nearly 18, 11 and 1. I have a handsome husband who's 14 years younger than me. I have been told life begins at 40. I don't want to age but I don't want to die either. I want to be around till the end of time and watch my children grow and one day have the privilege of being a part of my grandchildrens lives too. If you think 40 is old then you need your head testing. 80 is old to me and I sure hope I reach my 100th birthday with my family beside me.

Ok but everyone has fears, this is my only one and I understand why for some it might seem stupid, I think people who fear spiders etc are stupid, I think if you asked your 18 year old if he thought 40 was old and he answered honestly then he would say yes, I think saying I need my head testing is a bit extreme haha

  • lmao... 40 was "really old" in the Medieval Age. Today is definitely a different story.

  • You do realise if you actualy quit the alcohol and smoking and take care of your body that it actualy keeps you in youth for longer. To be hoonest your life style will make you look and feel older when normal people will feel younger.
