When you are purchasing things online, buy from only reputable websites. Such sites normally have secured payment options.
Make sure your computer has decent antivirus protection.
Keep an eye on your credit card statements - check your statements regularly for any unauthorised transactions and report any to your bank/credit card provider immediately.
When using ATM machines/ETFPOS machines, if they look like they are tempered with - Don't use them.
And opt for a pin number over a signature option for your credit card. I don't know if it is an option with your credit card provider but signature based credit cards in New Zealand is not allowed now. However I know many countries still offer this.
Yes, it is a big issue but as long as you monitor your credit reports, you are good.
