Is it normal biting off small pieces of my tongue?

Hello,
for the past decade or so I have had this re-occurring habit of putting idividual sections of my taste buds between my bottom teeth and my fingernail and ripping that material off. After a while, this leaves the majority of the first inch of my tongue covered in a white, scab like substance. This does make my tongue bleed and dull my sense of taste and I believe it may have permanently dulled my sense of taste in the affected areas over the years.

It ruins my fingernails and there is constantly blood on my hands and I must wash my hands frequently to avoid getting blood anywhere else. This keyboard will be sanitized soon. I love doing this even though it makes salty foods painful to eat. I usually don't realize when I am doing it but even if I do, I enjoy the feeling of it so much that it takes me a few minutes to force myself to stop. There are periods of months in which I will not do this and I had a good run free from the habit but lately is has come up again and I wonder, is it normal?

Wow, my peeps. I'll even take it one step further... it's all about the bite and then slide down and crunch! I love doing this. Side of tongue is pretty much dead skin, or at least missing nerve endings. I don't pin point taste buds or anything, I just search for the perfect nip and then enjoy squeezing the tongue skin between my teeth in certain places and and getting my teeth "stuck together by the skin" and look for the perfect separation of teeth AS IF you just removed a suction cup decoration off your window by the direct center of the suction cup, no swift -from the side- trick. Sometimes that little piece of skin holds up big time pressure! ALL ABOUT THE PERFECT PIECE!

I do this more when I partake in the lovely cannabis.

Only thing that worries me is swallowing little pieces of skin like that, might clog arteries over time...

Well, it is considered 'normal' because vast amounts of people do it whether conscious or not. I personally started doing it as a child, and I have been doing it once a month for over 20 years. I keep on telling myself to stop because usually I'll pick for hours at a time, having bled out by the capsule loads, and the next 2 weeks my tongue feels so unbearable that I feel like committing suicide just to relieve the pain, however I sacrifice 2 weeks of pain for just a few minutes/hours of small and somewhat satisfying stimulative pain when picking. I do it with my teeth, and sometimes even with a pinhead. It's been so bad that I ripped a crater in my tongue almost leaving a snake-like shape, it has healed since then. Each person does it for different reasons, anxiety is a leading cause, which is again why it is considered normal as it is a popular impulsive action, much like consorting to binge eating when upset. I do it because I find enjoyment in the feeling, and the focus, it keeps me occupied.

This is the wrong place to ask, it's a VERY biased page. If someone doesn't do it or heard of it before, they'll consider it not normal without the proper research.

I have the same exact problem. I actually try to take off the parts that are on the line running vertically down the middle of my tounge. Usually starting at the tip. When I read about the "white scab like substance"(which is the part I like to tear off the most),how your fingernails always had blood on them from this, and how it takes a few minutes to stop, I was relieved and bummed at the same time that someone else had to deal with this shit too.I don't think it's normal for sure, but I still hesitate to see someone about it. For what it's worth, I know how you feel.

I do this too but I nibble at the sides of my tongue. I've been doing this since my childhood and there's mild scarring in a line up the side as a result of it. I really enjoy the feeling of it but I hate the habit. I'm usually unaware when i'm doing it so I have to make a conscious effort to stop doing it but it takes a lot of will power. I thought I was the only one who had this weird habit so its good to know i'm not the only one. I seldom bite so deep to make myself bleed and if that's regularly the case you should probably get help in stopping it.
    Good luck

i do this and have done this for most of my life. except I just bite them, I don't use my fingernail.

i have asked my doctor about it and if there's long term damage that I may be causing to my tastebuds and he assured me that they grow back... it seems like they do when I'm able to stop long enough for it to heal properly.

obviously it's not "normal" but other people do deal with the same/similar issue. mine is related to anxiety. i take medication for my anxiety but the tongue biting continues... sometimes worse than others.

I do the same just not to the same extent and only when I get a pimple or whatever on my tongue. I also have a habit of using nail clippers to cut chunks of my finger tips off but never so much they bleed. Only till they're red and raw, my sense of touch from this has dulled which it would because constant abuse on the same part of your body over extended periods of time does do a lot of damage.

I do this sometimes when i'm under a lot of stress. For me, however, when the stressful situation subsides and I have to chance to calm down, I no longer pick.

you have to ask if it's normal to mutilate yourself?

    talk to the doctor

    • It's just ripping the skin off. I know some people bite the inside of their cheeks.

you've already said you are scarred from it

so again you really aren't sure if it's normal?

this does not sound healthy and i recommend talking to a doctor

        • Yeah, you're right. I just can't imagine what a doctor would do/say about it =/

that's because you think i meant a medical doctor

            • I understand that.
I've seen those kind of doctors before and they usually tell me that its a nervous reaction of sorts, but I'm not into medication =/ tried it once and it ruined my vision.

But I typically don't go into detail. I just say I bite my nails.

I do the same thing with the inside of my bottom lip. I just bite on it but not hard enough for it to bleed or hurt.
