They have no drive to work. None. They’re more concerned with everyone else’s business, they don’t care about taking care of themselves. And they can only communicate via cell phone. They have no clue how to carry a conversation in real life.

If you are in full-time eduction I see how this could happen. I didn’t have my first work experience until age 19 after my second year of university and corona will not have helped with the availability of relevant work experience.

Agonising over whether this is normal or not isn’t going to help your current situation, are you applying for volunteering positions or asking if family friends if they could give you work experience?

    • I dropped out of university because it was too expensive, when I asked my dad about work he said there isn't one, especially in this pandemic.

and it's kind of true? people with qualification are losing their jobs, how would a person without qualification get a job at this time?, not to mention i have social anxiety, so i lack the confidence that other more successful people without qualifications have.

i have applied for jobs at different places but none have succeeded so far.

how do you apply to work at McDonalds?, do you just go ask at the store or is there a website you go to?.

I dont get why your dad would tell you this. You are living under a great economy assuming you're in the US. I remember I started at 8 an hour at my job during 2008 and it was the only thing I could find in town during the recession. Now everywhere I look theyre starting at like 18-20 an hour. Hell amazon is starting at $18+ now. You are living in a really good economy rn theres no reason to not have a job. Amazon has good benefits and pay. They will make you work your ass off but all factory jobs do that. UPS also is great. You could potentially make 100k+ a year in just a few years there if you're willing to drive.

I agree the pay is decent but cost of everything went way way up so it cancels that out.

Still a good reason to get a job. If not for you but to slow the collapse going on.

Oh I agree to get a job regardless I was only mentioning how even though pay is higher it doesn't mean much because the prices of everything have gone up.

I dont think its gone that far up comparatively to the wage. Food is still a similar price. Rent has gone up in some areas but thats more because everyone is moving to my area. Gas is the same if not cheaper. Used cars are still pretty cheap.

Most of the time there’s a website, if there’s a particular place you want to work at it’s worth sending them an email enquiring about any upcoming entry level positions.

You may also want to join recruitment agencies, they can be good for temp jobs especially. The most important thing is persistence, virtually every adult deals with unemployment at some point, just keep asking and keep applying and you will eventually strike gold.

There are no rules in life that you must have done this or that by a certain age. Everyone's situation is different.

Its called being a NEET, and a very srhamable offense. There is something you can do about it!
Find work, by means of a shitty minimum wage job, through your school, anything will do.

Definitely strange. By 20 you should have at least one or two jobs. I started working at 15. I don't know many people who didn't work by 20 actually I don't think I know any.

Is the person disabled? Do they struggle with mental health? These are factors. If they just had money thrown at them, working before you turn 20 isnt just about making money, it helps add responsibility and accountability. Im grateful looking back i started working young, got a job at tim hortons from 13-17. Summer of grade 8 all through highschool.Went to college for environmental science, dropped out cause it was water treatment focused and i wanted to be a conservation officer. Moved out. Got a job at walmart from 17-19 then got a job in sales. Went back to college for film when i was 20-24. 24-28 (present) working in my field.

If you're in school or some type of apprentiship then normal but if you're just laying around on your parents or bf og gfs bill then you need to grow up.

I didn't need much. It was also expected that I would never want anything that my parents wouldn't be happy to buy me, and it didn't occur to me to defy that expectation. There was often lots of shouting and insults and 'you should be ashamed', and I tended to do whatever I had to, to avoid it. I came to realise all too late though that it was actually arbitrary and that no action of mine would ever help me avoid it. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to just do whatever I wanted because it didn't matter: the 'game' was rigged, and "the scapegoat" was my entrenched family role.

When I wasn't singing or playing in classical music groups or concerts or doing my homework I wrote secret journals, listened to an Evanescence CD I bought on a school residential holiday (a rare significant purchase that wasn't supervised!), and lived inside my head. The most rebellious thing I did was become a Christian and go to church against my father's wishes (my parents were both atheists) and have a long-distance relationship with a boy I met on holiday (it lasted 2 months and we didn't kiss or see each other after the holiday, and I was a Christian and didn't want to have sex before marriage.). Those things were worth my parents' rage.

When my mum thought I needed clothes, she bought me clothes, and if I wanted money, I asked for it and she gave me some if she agreed with what I wanted to buy. Also, we're big into birthdays and Christmas and random presents in our family, so I got lots of random presents of things my mum thought I wanted/was okay with me having, and she paid for all my orchestras, choirs and school trips. I got a weekly allowance from her for my lunch and bus money plus some left over.

Nope. Should of had at least one job by now.

What were you a kid that was just getting money from the parents to go to college? That's the only good option that is there for you.
