It strikes as EXTREMELY odd that you'd talk to someone then go on and date them without ever having asked her age. I know a lot of people who date people younger than them, but i believe that when someone's 17, they still have a lot to learn. Currently, I am 16 and dating a 24 year old. We have been dating for about 3 and 1/2 months. It's a very difficult relationship, especially with my religious and law-abiding father. Both of my parents know that we have had sex, and that we were together. However.. they do not trust me whatsoever anymore, and my boyfriend and I's relationship has ruined the relationship I have with my parents, my brother, and my best friend. I'm lying to everyone, and I can't tell anybody about our relationship in fear of them thinking it's disgusting or anything else. Just be careful. This is a lot of stress on both of the partners, especially the 16 year old. Although the relationship has struggled, we still have managed to stick together and remain loving each other unconditionally. We appreciate each other, flaws and all. He takes wonderful care of me and has never done anything to hurt me. And I mean that. Not once has he done something that I'm uncomfortable with, and not once has he ever physically or emotionally caused me harm. We are in love, and I plan on moving him as soon as I turn 18. We also plan to get married as soon as I graduate.

Personally I don't see such immense problems with this situation. It's not stereotypically 'normal' as such, because most sixteen year old girls date guys their age or perhaps a few years above/below, the same with twenty-four year old guys. I think the fact that it is so uncommon may make people believe that it is wrong, or even go to the lengths of calling it a crime (I don't know exactly about what country's laws you are bound to but here in the UK, sixteen is the legal age of consent). I think the main judgement in this is her maturity. Nowadays, with family problems and media pressure as well as general life experiences, girls grow up much quicker than they used to, and if by sixteen she is mature enough to make her own decision on something this important then she can only blame her immaturity for any regrets. Conclusively, if it works and you're both confident and happy, the age barrier should only be as big an issue as you make it.
