Is it normal for a cat to wander off?

My cat is gone for about 5 days now. He knows to wander off, and his longest absence was 9 days. I don't live a large town and I would like to know does your cat wander off. If yes, for how long?

Cats often wonder off. Some just have it in their personality to explore. Others need more stimulation or better food at home.
I had one cat when i was a child, he would wonder off for weeks at a time.
Is your cat neutered? If he isn't he is probably out looking for a mate. Or if he was neutered late he may still have that urge.

Yeah, he is probably looking for a female in this time. All of the neighbors cats are neutered, so he is looking for it in a pretty large area.

I suggest you neuter him. Unneutered cats often end up killed by other males, get diseases from fighting or sex, wonder to far and get killed by wild animals or dogs etc etc

Looking for another mate, exploration, New friends that tempted him/her to wander longer. It's normal. When he comes back get him chipped with a personalized collar as well so that you will know where he is and others know who he is.

The good thing is that you live in a less populated area. There will be less people and other pets to scare him off the trail back home. Also, the more he goes out to wander, the more he'll be more independent and WILL be away for longer. Cats don't like being bored. YOU have to stay home because we as humans lock ourselves with a job, or just being used to our surroundings. Cats are free spirits and adapt so well that they automatically revert to a natural predator when in the wild and only ALLOW us to care for them, easier way to be fed and for a few days not worry about bigger predators.

    • That's why I like cats. No one can crush their independent and wild spirit. xD

If you have an outside cat yes. If you have an only indoors cat no. Some cats let you take them for walks.

I know, right? People look at me awkwardly when they find out that I, a black, steak &....well, steak, manly man had a cat. But he actually somewhat represents me

My cats always come home early in the evening to raid our supplies of cat food and sleep in the most akward places like in the middle of the floor or the stairs but I know many people have wandering cats. Have you thought of using a cat cam to find out where it's going?

Cats like to go outside and probably play, sleep or do their business on the grass (My neighbors' cat does it on my lawn), explore, walk, look for a friend or a mate, and other things. You don't have to look for him. He knows his way back to your house.

im pretty sure my cat came to me from someone elses house. My parents first saw the cat about 20 years ago in our backyard, and he actually came to us and stayed in 1997. He was already neutred and declawed. We think he was living in our woods for a while. Hes Still with us today.

It happens, especially if they are male cats who are not fixed.

Sorry to hear your cat has been gone for 5 days and I just want to start off by saying I hope your cat comes back home soon!

When I was young we had an awesome orange tabby cat named Sophia that disappeared. Maybe she ran away and maybe she was stolen. We don't know and that was nearly 30 years ago. Later I had a black kitten that our stupid neighbors stole. My mom had another orange tabby kitten that disappeared.

From the time I moved into my first apartment after I went away to college until now all the cats in my life have been indoor cats. So now I have a Siamese cat that is strictly an indoor cat of course. I got him neutered when was a few months old and he isn't sad or desperate to go outside. He goes in the garden occasionally but is never unsupervised. My mom even gave me a pet stroller as a birthday gift and I take him with me when I work out and he loves it.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is why do people still do the outdoor cat thing? I'm not trying to put anyone down or start anything but I just don't get it. I don't get the whole cat's don't need baths cause they wash themselves thing either but I digress.

Ehh I lost a cat this way. He was even microchipped and I spent a TON of time looking for him to no avail.

My cat has been gone over a month now, I assume he died sadly even though he's pretty good on his own. He once went off for 3 weeks and came back. I just hope he's not dead and found a new home atleast.
