Is it normal for a stray cat to follow you around?

There was a stray cat that hung around my house. The cat seemed cool so I fed him with the leftovers from my lunch (a meaty fish) and I accompanied it while it was eating in my lawn. When I went back inside it bumped its head to my leg and I gave it a short, friendly pet.

The next day when I left for a nearby grocery store I found the same cat sitting down on the carpet on the porch. It meowed at me and bumped its head to my leg again and I returned it with a tickle to its chin. When I started walking it began following me and sometimes running quickly ahead of me and climbing a nearby tree before following me again, occasionally stopping right in front of me—and I stumbled after it. It seemed to be distracted by the appearance of another cat though, with which it sat and just stared at each other, and then it stopped following me. I didn't find the act annoying though, in fact I found it flattering!

It has been visiting my house again since then, just sits there on the porch and meows when it hears the door being opened. Sometimes I spare my lunch or dinner for it to eat. I don't plan on adopting it as a pet, though, at least not yet because I'm just not prepared to have a pet.

So yeah, back to the question—I'm just curious whether it is normal what the cat does. I'd also appreciate it if you could share some suggestions as to what I should do with the cat—is having a pet cat a pain in the backside?

I quite like the idea of being chosen by a pet, as opposed to it always being the other way around.

Eating a cat or dog is like eating a cow In india. Also since in America they keep them as pets they have laws against it for animal cruelty reasons. No one cares if you eat cow or pig or chicken. They do seem to have a issue with horse meat aswell. Although alot of people in America do eat horse. Be careful if you eating cat or dog especially uf its in street becuase you might be chomping someones pet and they will sue you.

It's perfectly normal. A stray cat will be your best friend until you adopt it. Then it will ignore you unless it is hungry.

You fed it. That's all it takes, really, and you've got a friend for life.

I've had a cat choose me as its owner before-- A little stray who just walked up to my front door when I was a child and started meowing for someone to feed it. We gave it some canned tuna and from then on, we were hers.

  • Let it stay outside if you don't want it in your house.

I think it likes you. I think you should adopt the cat since it seems to have taken a liking to you.

      • Haha I'm sorry, but there's a story right above yours that seems strangely connected to this one. *Narrows eyes*

Well yes, when he needed care and nourishment you were there for him... when you feed cats they think you must be the greatest hunter to get food like that, and are honored you would share it with them... I think you should take him in when youre ready... its most definitely not a ''pain in the backside'' lol! at least no more than most other pets. They keep to themselves mostly, should be automatically litterbox trained, the only trouble you might have is with scratching up the furniture or jumping on the counter, but can easily teach them not to. i guess it really depends what kind of person you are but i love my cat, hes old now and very cuddly.......we have a lot of good times^^

I see what you mean. I have a stray cat now that's been in my yard and rubbing up on my legs. Of course my Siberian Husky goes crazy every single time she sees him. I don't know if it was one of the kittens I raised for a week before they had to leave or what but some reason this cat is attached to me. I was rubbing him and then he play nipped me but it didn't hurt. I hope I'm okay though. But I don't know if he needs help or what cause he did have some kittens but now there gone somewhere. When he came up to me I saw one of his ears were scratched up. I don't know how that happened. I don't know if he needs any help or what because he normally didn't do this, he just walked away anytime he'd see someone. I need some answers if I should help him or just leave him alone.
