Is it normal for a teacher to lay his hands on my shoulder?

So I was talking to this teacher of mine and I was telling him about some problems I had been dealing with at home, and he put his hand on my shoulder while I was talking (to comfort me, I assume?) He left it there for a while and he started stroking my shoulder. A couple of minutes before, he had told me I looked pretty.

Personally, I don't find this creepy, but my sister does. What do you think?

  • Don't assume the worst. You hear girls calling eachother pretty while using physical comfort all the time, why should it be seen as anything different when a man does it? Perhaps he was trying to boost your confidence and make you feel happy by calling you pretty and the physical comfort?

I've had a female teacher call me a "good looking lad" while physically comforting me (therapist), that doesn't mean she wanted to have sex with me.

There was a teacher at my high school who behaved that way towards several female students. He would do things like put his hand on girls' shoulders to feel for a bra strap. He turned out to be a pervert and got fired and was banned from working with children and teenagers forever.

Now your teacher may be innocent, but you should probably not get that close to him again, just in case he has ulterior motives.

Idk if it's normal for a teacher to just lay their hands on a students shoulders for a few seconds, but... to keep it there, and then tell the student that they're attractive? Unless the problems that you're dealing with is that you feel like you're not pretty, there's no reason for him to suddenly say "You're pretty" :/

In this situation, I don't think it's normal.

Hi, I feel like I should clarify that I had also told him a classmate of mine had called me ugly, so he was just reassuring me by telling me that I was pretty.
Maybe I should have mentioned this in my post :p

I'm sure he was just trying to be nice. Be careful though, if people get the wrong idea, he could lose his job.

How do you not find this creepy????
He's presumably a lot older than you, and a your TEACHER.
    WTF. CONTACT THE POLICE.

You can't exactly contact the police if someone touches your shoulder and tells you you're pretty :p

and he's actually less than 10 years older than me, I'm in my late teens. (and I'm no longer a minor)

        I was joking.
And I read some of the other comments you posted and it seems you left out some details in the story, like how you were complaining that a girl said you were ugly.
But touching and stroking your shoulder may have just been a way to comfort you, I don't know.

It depends. If he told you that you looked pretty as a way to compliment your outfit or something, I wouldn't think much of it. But if he thinks you're attractive, I'd probably feel a bit creeped out. As for the shoulder-thing, that's actually a bit weird.

Ok, let's forget about chairs and good humor. I thought you were referring to your stilt walking teacher.

  • Sounds creepy, if I was a teacher I would never put my hands on a kid unless I had no other choice in defending myself.

My pension wouldnt be worth whatever that kid could possibly make up and end up ruining my career.

So did my teacher! But that was in class, and it was because he could see, I was scared of him.

In what way did he say that you were pretty? The way they say it often reveals their intentions.

You mean your teacher called you pretty or he laid his hand on your shoulder?

I was complaining about a classmate of mine who had called me ugly, and he said something which in English would translate to: "You're not ugly. You're a pretty girl to look at", so I thanked him and I continued talking about my problems in class and at home and then he laid his hand on my shoulder.

Would you also have freaked out if he told you you were pretty as a response to hearing a classmate of yours had called you ugly?

          Thanks for replying btw :)

As I said before, it would depend a lot on how he said it. For example if he just said it briefly, or in a way that you could tell, he really ment it? Also, notice the tone that he used when he said it.

i think your sister is being melodramatic.

in the military they have classes on what is and isn't appropriate behavior. Green light for "nothing wrong", yellow light for "questionable", and red light for "always wrong"

a casual touch on the shoulder is in the green light category. unless the person tells you "don't"

No, that's definitely not normal. Comforting is one thing, but to linger, stroke and then compliment is weird.

Please, be careful around him and if he tries anything tell someone immediately.
