Is it normal for a 6th grader to want to grow up to be a commando?

I tutor middle school students at a special school and today kids were talking about jobs they wanted when they grew up. Most kids had normal job ideas but one kid said he wanted to be an army commando. He said he's always been fascinated by the idea of shooting and killing people. Will he outgrow this? I'm afraid to teach him math now ...

You're a teacher and this scares you? You must not have been teaching very long.

Go to Toys R Us and look in the boy toy aisle and tell me that boys don't have some kind of fascination with guns, violence and the military. I used to stock Army play sets where little boys could have fake guns and dress up as soldiers and they would practically fly off the shelves while the firefighter and Native American (really?) sets would be left hanging.

Then go to the Electronics department and look into the video game aisle. What are the trending games? Modern Warfare, Black Ops... WAR games.

I'm surprised that the other students have such normal career tastes. Sheltered pussies.

No matter how intelligent teachers like to think they are they don't know a pile if shit from a cheeseburger, I would love to have this kid fighting for my right to eat mcdonalds and watch my american made pron cause I'm too much of a fat ass to do it myself, plus they don't have mcdonalds in Iran.

Boys will be boys. It's not like he's going to grow up and actually kill people.

Wait your mad he wants to join the military? Lots of kids want to, just because its not doctor, or teacher, or scientist dont mean its not a job. I would say one might show concern over him wanting to shoot people but realistically that is what you do in the military. You are trained for killing and combat and performing the duties you are assigned to. So the fact of the matter is he will have to kill someone if he becomes a troop. He is just smart enough to understand this. Sounds like a bright young kid to me. Also he said he wants to be an Army man and kill people how is math going to possibly help him accomplish killing you? Are you being serious? He will kill who the army tells him too. So even if he is a killer your not even on his list. So what point is there worrying about it?

The fact that he mentioned killing people is the weird part....Little boys love the idea of the army because of the adventure, the coolest toys like tanks, jeeps, guns, etc...fighting is seen as exciting ...explosions...risking your life...but young boys dont fully understamd the reality of death, injury and loss...they want to " fight" and maybe even kill the enemy because they wamt to protect...but they usually dont specifically single out killing people...thats a little sick.

OMG....what the hell are you talking about. Some of our best in the military grew up just like this boy is growing up. He is not dangerous to anyone. Of course you should teach him the necessary studies to get on to higher grades. He will be just fine. We have enough guys in our society who can't pull a trigger.
    Treat him like a Viking.

I would be concerned too... Perhaps, you should talk to your supervisor/ the school therapist for advice on how to approach this. You definitely should bring your concerns up with his parents.
