Is it normal for an adult not to know the cardinal directions

While talking with my friend about travel destinations the other day, I realized that he didn't know the meaning of north, south, west and east. Those are all words that he had heard of course, but he didn't really understand what they mean. This is something I learned in primary school. This guy finished secondary school. IIN?

I don't remember learning this in school. I learned it at home. My father always told us what direction we were going when ever we went on a drive and taught us how to read maps. I love maps.

Sometimes, I forget The directions, but the fact that he's never heard of them is concerning. I guess it says allot about the educational system.

I work in education and the system now is all about meeting targets. If you make the targets easier, more people meet them and the more money you get.

There was a post on IIN recently about the Golden Ratio. It was taught to me at about 12 or 13. This person was a Maths undergraduate and didn't know what it was. It's not that they are stupid. They've just never been taught it. And I think it's a failing in our system that we're not teaching it, not a failing in the person who posted. I feel genuinely sorry for them.
