I think I did that when I first started, but it's not really as effective if you concentrate on only one area. But, as they say, if it feels good, do it. Some people seem to squeeze a lot, and I never found that felt good. I use my whole hand except the pinkie because my pinkie is kind of stiff. I can't grasp all around the shaft because it doesn't feel precise and doesn't feel pleasurable to me. Plus it's kind of thick, so my hand has to make a C-shape, rather than an "O" shape. My hand is sort of at an odd angle too because I like my thumb completely free to directly stimulate, rather than just hooked around the shaft. The fact you're not circumcised may have something to do with it too. I think a lot of cut guys squeeze/rub really hard on their head/shaft because the head is keratinised from constant friction against clothing. Uncut guys can get away with a lot gentler stuff to achieve the same goal.
