Is it normal for my cat to be this angry?

We adopted a kitten from the pound yesterday, and my almost 2 year old cat is not taking it well. He has spent the last 24 hours growling, hissing, swatting, and swishing his tail, even towards me. Earlier on today, he finally began playing with the kitten, and then they went back to hissing, then playing, and now they're sleeping.

Is it normal for him to be this pissed off? Will he calm down or should I bring the kitten back?

He'll be fine. It takes time and cats are just bitchy creatures!

  • Cats are jealous. My mom always brings in a new kitten every year or so and all my cats go in piss mode where they just hate the new comer. Some of my cats accept it others still hate. Time will tell you how your cat is. Just don't forget your older cat, spend time caring for it and I think that should help it accept the new kitten.

It's probably rabies, just kill it. Just kidding.
No seriously a pet should not behave like this. You are stupid for getting a cat in the first place.

It took a good week for my adult cat to accept our kitten... but now they are the BEST of friends, and we cannot separate them :)

  • It's because by bringing another cat into his territory, you've invaded his kingdom.

The best way is to introduce them gradually and make sure you supervise them together until your older cat no longer views the newcomer as a stranger or a vet.

Maybe buying a book on cat behaviour would be a good idea, especially about introducing cats to each other.

to the author: she's just getting used to her new programming.. give it some time and they'll love each other. (and try not to get discouraged by the hissing. their just gatos :)

      *silly lil fuzz-faces..too cute.

It really takes time. my cat was the queen of the house. Then we got a dog. The cat never touched the floor for 3 months. Hissed, etc. The dog was friendly with cats before so she didn't care about the cat. It took my cats 3 months before she was able to be in the same room with the dog.
Surely your kitties will get along. Maybe not best friends but decent to each other in time.
