My mom takes my rectal temperature when I am sick because she wants to make sure I’m not “faking it”. She also takes my younger sisters and it is really embarrassing even though she wear gloves. Is it normal?
Your mother likely grew up when taking rectal temperatures was normal (and considered more accurate and safer than other temperatures). Rectal temperatures were normal for decades - especially for younger children that might chew on and break glass thermometers inserted under the tongue.
As such, it is normal for her to do it; and she is doing it properly by wearing gloves.
NO medical doctor is going to tell her that its not an accurate way to take temperatures.
You may wish to tell her that technology has made taking oral temperatures safe now (as glass thermometers are no longer common), and that rectal temperatures is no longer considered normal or even a common practice (it is still used for certain situations though where the face/mouth is messed up).
You can even get good temperatures by forehead contact with expensive instruments (which I'm sure she has seen in medical clinics - although the device they use costs about $400 the last time I checked).
I cannot remember either of my parents have done that, except maybe once when I was a baby/toddler. Clearly its not needed under normal circumstances and she should quit if you're not okay with it
