Is it normal for parents to disown you after finding a significant other?

I have very recently found somebody that I love dearly, but my parents don't seem to be very happy about it. I'm an independent man and I can make my own decisions. But both my mother and my father now refuse to acknowledge any connection to me at all and I don't know why. I haven't really experienced having a girlfriend or boyfriend before because I'm an extremely secluded person. It's just bizarre; I've always been quite close to my parents and this is one of the last things I'd expect from them. Maybe it's because he's another guy. I don't know, I don't think it's that, but I just don't know what else it could be! Has anybody else had this happen to them?

Sounds like it's because he's a guy, yeah. I'm sorry you're going through this. Maybe just show up if you live nearby. I don't normally recommend that sort of thing but they're your parents.

It could be normal depending on the country you live in, either way it’s not right

You could call them on the phone, and ask them what's up with them?

    • Yes...I've called them multiple times, but they just hang up.

So were your parents massively homophobic people before all of this?

My parents have disowned me before lol if I got with the wrong person theres no doubt they'd block my number and not allow me to come to their house

Is there more to the story? What's their reasoning for it?

        • There isn't a lot more to say, honestly...I'm pretty sure they don't like the fact that their son is in love with a guy. I don't really get it, but I'm probably not going to understand any time soon either.

How long have they known you were gay? Thatd be kind of rough on me as well if my son was gay. But in time id accept it. If he just came home one day with a dude and said "this is my boyfriend" and hes never said he was gay id be kind of upset for a while. But in time id get over it.

            • Not very long. I've never felt like this about a guy until now. They just asked me why I'd been drinking more often and what was bothering me, because they used to check on me pretty often. Just overprotective, I guess. I agree though, I would probably be pretty shocked and upset too. It's been pretty new to me, and I don't really deal with change very well. So I guess this makes sense.

As a black man trying to make it in this world, I understand it can be difficult as a bisexual or homosexual trying to make it in this world.
