I have noticed that if there is static on my radio if I stand next to it, the static clears up. When I go away from it, the static starts up again
You are acting as a capacitance coupled, external antenna for the radio.

Go into the World my son and make static disappear wherever you stand (near a radio anyway)

Yes it is normal. Your body is acting like an antena or signal amplifier. It might not be much but it is enough to make the staticd issapear. You can try to do the same with remote car keys by placing it under your jaw and you can unlock your car from further away.
