Is it normal for someone to wear the same clothes for years?

A woman I work with has worn the same four outfits EVERY DAY, no matter the season, for five years (and that's just how long I've been there!) The outfits all consist of a long flowered skirt and, by now, ratty color-coordinated t-shirts. We work for a respected law firm, and it's embarrassing, at least to me.

She is beginning to smell bad, too. She is 49 years old and should have some clue as to how weird this is. It's beginning to seem kind of pathological.

  • Some of us are just not as superficial as you. I think you are snotty and I don't care for you.

    As long as the clothes are washed, yes it's completely normal. I never grew up around the "new-outfit-everyday" hype because I lived on an Island where the closest clothes store was about 2 hours away, so I basically lived off of hand me downs. I have a lot of clothes now but I basically only wear like 5% of them. I have a t-shirt that I wear everyday that I got from my Safe Grad, I wear it two days in a row and then wash it, sometimes it's 1 day or 3 day variations on the washing, depending on if the shirt appears or smells dirty. I like routine, for me, wearing the same clothes is comforting.

    I buy multlipes my clothes in triplicate usually. 3 of the same shirt, pants, boxers etc. I also buy the same shirt in different colors. Keeps things simple and it's a wardrobe that I enjoy.

      Also, if one shirt or pair of pants gets worn out or damaged, at least then you have a back up.

        Exactly

  • Aslong as they wash the clothes, there's no problem. There was this guy in college that litrally wore the same clothing for two to three years, and he is probably still wearing them.

    As long as the clothes are clean, there is nothing wrong with wearing the same outfits each week. Maybe she can't afford new clothes.

  • Maybe she thinks she can't afford to buy new ones. Sometimes, clothes are low on some people's priority list when it comes to divvying up their pay-cheque.

    It's normal if she's a cartoon character.

    I wish I had the balls to do that.

    Smelly = bad.
    Wearing what she likes and being discriminated against for it = bad.

    as long as she isn't smelly i don't really see the issue. People wear what they want and feel comfortable in

    ouch.. some people are not really creative, so they buy a few items looking exactly the same. That might give the illusion that she wears the same outfit every day.
    But if you're saying it's the SAME clothes... Doesn't she ever wash them? gross..

      Yeah probably she just has multiple pairs of the same pieces of clothing..Which is still weird but at least a lot less disgusting..

        I had a buddy like that in highschool, but he was colorblind. So all of his stuff was either black or white. if he wouldn't have a diffirent band logos on his shirts, occasionally, you might think it's the same shirt.
