Is it normal for this to happen to my fish?

I bought three little fish from Wal-Mart a few weeks ago. They were small silver fish about 1" long. A week after I got them, one of the fish's stomachs started to really bulge. At first I thought I was overfeeding the fish, so I fed it a little less. That didn't work, so I just figured it was pregnant. A few weeks later, it died. The same thing happened to the second fish, and now my last fish is getting fat too.

Walmart fish are pretty much disposable… like hamsters.

  • I followed all your advice, but my poor fishy still died :(
I'm just not gonna buy fish anymore. Every fish I had either got sick, got eaten by another fish, or committed suicide by jumping out of its tank.

To go off previous comment, the pea should be steam cooked and peeled. Fish can go without food for days. Also make sure whatever you feed them isn't bigger than their stomach ( usually the size of their eye) once regular feeding begins continue with one feeding a day and remove uneaten food. If you're not using a filter make sure you do water changes using conditioner to remove chlorine.

I have also heard walmart fish tend to come with diseases because their staff isn't properly trained to care for fish!

I sounds like it could have swim bladder disease or neon tetra disease. Swim bladder disease can be cured simply because it means your fish is constipated. Take some water from its tank and put it in a container then put the fish in there alone, making sure there is plenty of surface area and you can float the hospital tank in the normal tank to keep the temperature regulated. Give it some unflavored green peas and hopefully it will be "relieved" in a few days. If that's not the case, kill all of the affected fish and thoroughly clean your tank and start from scratch. If you need more help, send me a message and I will walk you through the correct tank setup for your fish. It takes more work than most people think.
