Is it normal i’m addicted to hype streetwear?

I'm a little worried about this to be honest because I feel like it’s getting out of control. I feel like I’m addicted to brand name items, and the more expensive it is the better. I have over 25 pairs of yeezys and nmds, uncountable Supreme and BApe, tons of offwhite, vlone, yeezus and enough Louis Vuitton to outfit a small airport XD. I have a 4 car garage and about three of the spaces have shelves full of clothes and shoes. However, I think I’m addicted. I have no other hobbies that consume much money and a good enough job to support it but my house looks like an organized (and overpriced) episode of “Hoarders”. I realize the amount I’ll spend to get a rare T-shirt or hoodie is obscene but every time I find it it’s like a high for me and I have depression that the buying makes better temporarily. I don’t know how to stop this, I’ve tried Prozac (with prescription) but it didn’t help me over the course of a few months as much as getting a new belt or some useless waste of money like that. I don’t even wear a quarter of the stuff I buy I just can’t stop. It’s gotten to the point where I’m uninterested in chasing girls because I’d rather chase that rare off white X Nike collab. First world problems at its finest, I know.

EDIT: added more of my problem

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'm thinking these are game gathers, and not actual physical possessions. Your words Boojum can potentially help nonetheless.

    • Nope it’s all real stuff. I used to do this with CS:GO skins (in game) but I was able to uninstall and stop that after I lost a couple thousand in skins.

Don't obsess over brands. Unless of course they have an in house movement and a bunch of jewels.

        • My problem is I can’t stop obsessing over them XD. And my jewel collection is rather small compared to some people :P

If you feel this is a problem, then that's a pretty good indication that it is a problem.

I can understand the buzz you get when you track down and obtain some absurdly rare item. That's something hardwired into us; a holdover from the times when our ancestors had to track and kill game in order to survive.

It's interesting how you link this behaviour with your depression, and that sounds valid to me. Medication helps many depressed people, but not all, and I think it's unwise to see it as a permanent solution in any case. From what you say, it sounds like you have no social life and most of your free time is spent sitting in front of a computer monitor. There's a clear link between depression and not spending quality time with other people and not getting much exercise, so it's easy to get caught in a vicious circle.

Changing habitual behaviour can be very difficult, but I wonder if it might help if you were to force yourself to spend more time in natural surroundings getting some light exercise. Even just changing your routine to make it a habit to wander around your local park for half an hour every day might make some difference to your outlook.

About the only positive thing I can say about this is that if you keep all the stuff in its original packaging and you've got the space and discipline to hold on to it for a few years, you might be able to make a profit ebaying it. So maybe you could think of all the stuff in your garage as your retirement fund. Just make sure you keep a systematic inventory and that your home contents insurance will cover the costs of your true loss if it should all go up in flames.

    • Thank you so much for the help you seem actually vested in helping people on this site. I agree I should find more people to hang out with but people usually like me at first cause I appear attractive and fun then realize I’m shy and don’t have great social skills so I always kind of drift away from them. And on the excersise thing, I understand the same link myself, but I’m also an active competitive motorcycle rider and I get enough excersise through that to keep in pretty good shape, and most of this riding is indeed out in the woods. Thank you again for your help.

Apart from the obvious health and criminality issues surrounding drug use, it seems to me that addictions really only become a problem when they screw up your life so much that the feeding the addiction is the only thing that matters to you.

It would be one thing if you came home from your shift at McDonald's every night, slumped in front of your computer screen in your parent's basement and spent every penny you'd earned on branded crap you neither want nor can afford. But it sounds like you have a well-paid job, a nice house, and you participate in a sport, so you're obviously more than your addiction.

I can see why you're thinking that what you do is not the most positive way you could spend your time and money, but there are many worse and more self-destructive hobbies you could have. I guess the real issue is you feeling a lack of control and such a strong compulsion to do this?

Maybe that's something you should discuss with an addiction counsellor.

I can relate to the problems a reserved nature can cause. I've never been a social person, and my circle of friends is very small, but I've always been content with that, so I'm not the one to give advice on how to be more social. I do know, though, that social skills can be learned if you're motivated to do so.

        • I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it is all about my compulsive urges. I’ve struggled with a bit of OCD and nothing relieves it more then completing a collection of supreme shirts or having one of every way colorway of retro air Jordan’s. And on the social thing I just have a very hard time relating to people over things, I’m shy and prefer old timey hobbies like from the 1800’s like fine dining. And I do have one friend, but he’s online only and I met him on a supreme forum xD.
