Is it normal i always wanted to go to high school?!

Hi, I am from the UK and I'm now in my twenties, as a teenage girl, i'd always wonder what it would be like to live in America. I love the look/sound of high school. It's much more interesting than english schools. With the idea of jocks, cheerleaders, and geeks etc, it sounds interesting, but is it really like that? Is it normal to like the thought of 'High school' so much?

Nothing like you see in movies. More like you might see on the news. Just think school shootings and you won't feel you are missing out on anything good.

I still remembered the morning we walked into school and we were summoned into the common room by our Dean and was told of the Columbine High School massacre back in 1999.

It was my second year in high school and we were terrified that the same thing could happen to our school. When we were told that the shooting were committed by fellow students I couldn't believe it.

I was in 7th grade in an American public school. A few years later someone was shot and killed at my high school, "luckily" it was just the one guy.

You need to realize this stuff is never like in the movies. This stuff is either over glamorized or over exaggerated. Unless you are watching something from japan which seems to be amazingly accurate. I doubt you are going to have a big sing along of "Oh oh oh oh stick to what you know! and than suddenly have everyone sing how being different is OKAY! That nonsense only happens in movies.

Depends on which school you go to. There's bad ones and good ones, but you'll probably never get that Hollywood experience if that's what you're craving. Lol

Everything is exaggerated in movies, don't believe what you see in the movies

I am from the US and did study abroad in Europe for my last year of high school. The main differences I noticed is that everyone, regardless as to career plans, goes to the same school in the US and that there is much greater emphasis on extracurricular activities. That said, school in the US is nothing like in the movies; The jocks, cheerleaders and geeks are pretty obsessed with getting into good colleges and getting scholarships and the burn-out types just want to finish school so they can spend more time working and/or partying. There's also more crossover between cliques than you might expect; for example, cheerleaders who do school plays and hang out with drama geeks as a result, or kids who have been friends since elementary school who still hang out sometimes despite having developed different interests.

I have a question for Americans. Why is it called High School? Does it mean what I think it means?

High School merely means the highest part of the Public School system. There is Elementary for children, Middle School for young teens and High School for mid-late teens.

And then "Higher" education refers to College.

You're not missing out on anything. Depression and self-esteem deprivation are rampant in that hellhole.

They say that the grass is always greener on the other side, this I find to be true. Be thankful that you grew up and went to school in the UK. There's a lot of corruption in the US school system. There are many Americans that are so undereducated that they can't find other countries/continents on the map. There's also a shit ton of gun violence, etc. It makes me glad that I was home-schooled.

As a teenager I always pictured American high schools as this utopia when compared to high schools in New Zealand. The freedom of not wearing uniforms appealed to me.

Uniforms really aren't that bad. They make getting dressed in the morning easy. If you're too scared of losing your individuality then you're personality must not be so appealing, otherwise you wouldn't depend on your clothe to differentiate you from others.
