Is it normal i am not sure what proficient means in school?

Advanced, proficient, above basic, basic, below basic. When we take these scores in school they say what level we are at. I thought proficient meant above average intelligence. That advanced was like child prodigy and basic was knows barely enough to pass. I was told proficient means you don't know enough though. What was your highest score in school? Is proficient only good enough to get to remedial classes in high school/college? I thought advanced and up was like an A, proficient was like a B, Basic was like a C, and below basic is a D. Have I just been reading it wrong?

    I think it just means you're good enough to do something properly. A synonym would be "competent". A looser synonym would be "about average" So based on that, I'd say you're reading it about correctly: Advanced > Proficient > Basic. I could be wrong though.

    My scores never had "basic." Instead the term was "partially proficient" and "below basic" was "unsatisfactory." Basically, if you ever see a more in-depth grading rubric, they usually put proficient under "meets standards," which, yes, is basically a B (i.e. average) grade.

      That means a C is basic though. So shouldn't a C be MEETING STANDARDS? Also if B meets standards why would that mean the child is remedial?

        No C is not meeting standards it is "partially" meeting standards. In school, you usually still pass the class, but B is considered to be the grade that is expected or should be the goal from a student.
