Is it normal i can draw really well but...

I've always been great at drawing. I remember getting awards in elemantary school for being the most artistic in my class. Some of my drawings from 3rd-4th grade still amaze me. When I got in my teens that's when drawing became a big part of my life. But around 17 I had stopped drawing. I miss it and still draw from time to time but my problem is and has always been, I have to pysically have a picture of whatever I want to draw in order to draw it. I can't think of a rabbit, car, flower, etc. and draw it. Is that normal??

Perhaps your visual memory isn't that strong?

If it bothers you, you can improve it through simple practice techniques. Here's one that might benefit you by training your visual memory:

    - Look at an object or scene for 1 minute, then remove the object or scene from view and try your best to draw it as accurately as possible from memory. Then look at what you've got right and what's missing.

The more often you do this the greater your observational accuracy and stronger your visual memory (in theory). You can also reduce the time you take viewing the object or scene incrementally e.g. 1 minute, then 30 seconds, then 10 seconds. Practice makes perfect.

I draw really abstract pictures that turn out great but when it comes to drawing actual things such as a flower or a car, I suck at it. So yeah, I would say that its normal

Its normal, but I'm the exact opposite...other than I can still draw xD
I can draw epically merely from memory, which is strange seeing as I have forgetful dyslexia...and words...but words don't matter in drawing;3

Me too! I used to draw all the time, but I ran out of ideas or lost the love for drawing. It's sad. I think it's normal. Look for inspiration and make sketches.
