Is it normal i can't afford my pet's meds ( animal lovers please help)

I adopted a cat for free from a shelter and he appeared healthy. But a year later he has to be treated for a hard to kill germ and I am having trouble affording the meds. The vet bills were bad but the pills are $7 each and he's supposed to take them for like 6 months!
Looking at his papers it's clear he had this germ in the shelter but was treated for a simple cold virus. So, they misdiagnosed him and he got sick later. If I ask the shelter for some free or discounted meds what's the chance they will help? What's my options for cheaper pet meds? I borrowed money from my mom but I can't keep doing that.

  • The vet should be able to work with you on a payment plan.

How do we know what the shelter will say? Ask them yourself and stop wasting time with the treatment for your cat

Does the vet say it's clear he had the infection in the shelter or is this just your assessment? If I were you I wouldn't be charging in and demanding they help you: even mentioning that you think he already had the infection when you got him will put them on the defensive. Just contact them and see if they can help

If you really care about that animal then you could dress up like a homeless person during your free time and beg for money. You could also steal if your good at it. Ya, both of those things are bad, but it looks like your out of options. If you want to save that cat's life you'll do it.

The homeless act is a good idea, but not the stealing.

Try to do a quick search on low income pet assistance. I know in big cities there are often programs to help low income families/ people afford care for their animals. You can also try purchasing the medicine online for a better price. By doing a quick internet search, I found anti fungals to treat cryptococcosis, at 3.50 a pill. It's finding the right dose and confirming safety with the vet that's important. There are holistic pet remedies and medicines too, and sites that sell them, often customers will leave reviews so you can see how well they work. 7.00 IS a lot. I doubt if the shelter you got the cat at would help, but perhaps they can give you some resources. They should also be made aware of the cat's condition. In shelter situations, they often don't have the resources to test and treat every animal for specific issues, so it seems like general antibiotics are the go-to solution, with so many animals to care for. Finally, do a yelp search, and find a vet in your area that might seem more willing to work with people who have financial limitations. So sorry for your kitty.

My two cats were born from a sick mother. They were the only ones in their litter who survived. When I adopted them, they were sick with parasites and ringworm and other diseases. It costed somewhere between $1,000 and $10,000 to completely cure them. Luckily, they are better now. I had to give up some luxuries such as cable for a few months to pay for their medication, but it was worth it. You should ask your vet about what you should do.

    You should tell your vet

You have a couple of options. Talk to the vet about a payment plan. They make credit cards specifically for vet bills. You could talk to the shelter, but they likely can't help financially. You could ask your mom for more money. You could also try a natural cure. But that will cost money too. And germ is kind of vague. What illness takes 6 months of drugs to kill?

Cryptococcosis. It's a germ from pigeons.

    $7 doesn't seem like a lot to me ...
Honestly if you don't have money you shouldn't own a pet no offense.

$7 PER PILL! If he took just one every day for 6 months, it would come out to $1,281. If he took two per day, it would cost 2,562. That's a bit more than $7.

You didn't specify every day sorry.
What is the "germ" your animal is sick with?
