Is it normal i can't spell worth a damn?

As the title suggests, I am unable to spell at even a eighth grade level (I'm in my early 20's). The thing is though, I'm not a stupid person. I achieve very good marks in school, ironically English being one of my best subjects. How many of you are similar? I'm excellent with logic, and problem solving; I just can't seem to spell anything properly.

People of the internet - is this normal?

You could have a form of dyslexia, one of my family members are exactly the same :)

Words that I can't spell I have to actually manually learn. Words like "definitely" I have to sit down with a piece or paper and write down over and over to learn. You could try that?

That's stinks. I was always the top speller in the county. Once or twice I went to state.
Enough about me, yes, it is normal. I have friends like this.

  • I was wondering why you were saying this when you didn't make one mistake in the description, but then I seen that you said you used spell check.

Anyway, people have their ups and downs in their logic, yours might just be spelling. I'm pretty sure you will be able to fix it one day, like you said, English is your best subject.

Give it time, unless you have dyslexia, then maybe you can't get everything perfect, but I'm sure you can still improve, even if it's a little.

" but then I seen that you said you used spell check."

      Clears throat.

      Just kidding. I couldn't resist :-)

Spell check and having to Google words and names has made me much better with spelling.

I know some/many people who can't spell properly... one of my friends at school who was the best in class couldn't spell good (not in German nor in English... I am from Germany by the way)... And I know some other very intelligent persons who can't spell properly so I guess it is pretty normal^^

Myself I am also kinda smart (I don't wanna be braggy/arrogant) and am pretty good at spelling in German and English...

However in German - the spelling system is more phonetic when compared to English.

As a Dutch speaker I found the inconsistencies in English (other from grammar) spelling the biggest barrier.

Do you read literature often? If not, it might help if you did.
