Is it normal i dont understand the point of santa claus?

Parents tell this to their children. They must at one age tell the children "Oh we lied hes not real jokes on you". What is the point of this? Why would you tell your kids something that even YOU don't believe in. Children understand why this is wrong but parents don't seem to grasp the concept. Its like setting them up for failure. Why do parents enjoy torturing children? Do they believe its funny? It seems hypocritical to teach your kids something that you really don't even believe in yourself.

I always thought it was to bribe them into being good all year.

When I have children I'm wearing a suit of armor to bed on Christmas eve to protect my ribcage and vital organs when they come bursting in at 5am Christmas morning to jump on me

It makes Christmas more magical. My imagination ran wild as a kid. I loved Christmas because it felt so wondrous. I don't really see any harm in it, if you were to raise a kid on all the cold hard facts of adult life that they eventually are to find out anyway then that would sour their childhood. Let them have their magic, wonder, awe, joy and excitement.

      I wholeheartedly concur.
It's all about fun and magic and the total irresponsibility of youth. No harm, no foul, in my mind.

Because believing in Father Christmas (yes, I say Father Christmas, problem?) was a magical experience, it really makes you appreciate the holiday and the night before, and almost everyone finds out before their parents tell them. Sorry but I find this question silly, how can one possibly think it's pointless to make a child's Christmas worth waiting for?

I loved Christmas as much as my friends and more than most (and I still do). My parents never told me about Santa and I never believed. Christmas has far more meaning to kids than the beardy guy with the reindeer. Christmas is worth waiting for because you meet your family, you get presents, and there is fun and games. Magic isn't what makes it worth waiting for. You don't have to invent anything to make Christmas special, Christmas is special all by itself. Trust me :P

I'm not the OP, but I do agree with them.

  • I have never understood either. It seems like lying and makes kids not trust their parents. I never trusted my parents after that and still don't.

...Sarcasm. It must be sarcasm. Surely.

Wow ... not everything in life is a tragedy. I have never met a single person who had serious hang ups in their lives because they were absolutely shocked Santa Claus wasn't real. If you honestly believe parents torture their children by letting them believe a jolly fat man with extreme generosity will give them a gift if they were good all year, then no that's not normal.

People should be disgusted with actual torture, like rape or kidnapping; not Santa Claus.

    • Letting your child's believe something is not the issue. Putting the lie in their head when you don't in fact believe it yourself is the issue. Choosing not to tell someone the truth is entirely different apposed to putting the thought their yourself. Also no where did I say rape and kidnapping was ok.

You asked why parents enjoy torturing their children... The idea of Santa Claus is not torture any way you slice it. Little white lies to your children isn't either. I was giving you an example of what actual torture is because it sounds like you are very confused.

        • It does when you have to tell them "Oh yeah I lied". Its still lying to your child for no reason.

What's worse is that you are fucking expected to tell them this shit. I'm against it but my mom and boyfriend say when I have kids I need to tell them this because of "childhood"

Because if you don't the cocacola company will come and wipe your family off the face of this planet.

In all seriousness though, I don't know it's just something you do. Not to mention kids are dumb and might tell other kids who DO believe in santa that he isn't real and then YOU would be in trouble as a parent.
