Is it normal i hate how people pretend popular things aren't popular?
This is something I see a lot, I'm just going to use the most recent example to piss me off.
So, someone was complaining about Random Access Memories, Daft Punk's album that came out last year. He said that he didn't like how their sound had changed and that he was upset because this album made them mainstream and now their old style is dead.
You can make a point about how their style is changed, that's fine. They're not rehashing the same thing they did on Homework. Versatility is a good thing, I would think people would like for bands to do more than one style instead of making the same album over and over, but we all know how conservative music fans are.
But complaining that RAM made them mainstream? That's fucking stupid. Daft Punk had been extremely popular ever since their first single in 1995 and completely world famous since they released their debut album in 1997. Their music video for "Around the World" from that album quickly became one of the most popular music videos EVER MADE. The only way you can claim to have listened to Daft Punk before they were mainstream is if you were listening to them when they were a live band and didn't have any recorded releases to listen to. Even before RAM, Daft Punk was as mainstream as it gets. They've spent more time being mainstream than most bands spend existing.
Now, I know most people aren't dumb enough to think that Daft Punk was a breakout success last year and their mainstream popularity is newfound. But I see this kind of thing everywhere. A lot of Minecraft players ignore the fact that Minecraft is one of the best selling games of all time and that instead talk like it's their secret club, to the point that "Minecraft is some small indie game you've probably never heard of" is a meme in gaming circles to mock it. In fact, just about any video game that isn't published by Activision or EA will have a group of people convinced that they're underground for playing it, no matter how popular the game actually is.
I could go on, but you get it. You've probably seen it yourself. Is anyone else really bothered by the denial behind this?
