Is it normal i hate my cat?

My cat drives me insane. She won't listen to anything I tell her. I understand she's not a dog and doesn't know commands and everything but she should understand consequences! When she gets up on the counters I take her off and shout GET DOWN! She digs through my trash and tears it across the room constantly day after day even when I catch her in the act and tell her not to do it! It's like she's out to get me. She knows that when she does something wrong she gets yelled at, which she doesn't like. (By yelled at, I mean I shout at her in one word to scare or alarm her, I don't sit down and scream at her with sentences lol) So, am I crazy?

It's your responsibility to train her, not her responsibility to obey you.

Never yell at a cat if you want it to love you, and listen. Instead think.... to keep it off the counters (which i don't care one of my cats loves to be on the counter, I dont mind... I wipe it down with bleach before I use it.) But you can put double sided tape on the counter... they dont like the feeling. Put your trash somewhere your cat can't get to it.... they are easy fixes. its not the cats problem.... its yours.

She probably senses you hate her so she intentionally pisses you off, and quite frankly you deserve it. Give her to someone who will love her.

Cats are not dogs, if you come downstairs and yell at her after she went through the trash then she will not understand what it's about!

Our kitten tried to raid the trash it so we got a stainless steel 4 foot tall trashcan that has a top that closes. No problems.

If you can't easily remedy the problem by training her with either a spray bottle or a can of airspray (works really well around computers)or kitty-proofing your house then last resort- find a new home for the poor baby.

By new home I mean putting her on petfinder, or finding a no-kill humane society. But sadly, re-homing should be the last option. Why did you get a cat in the first place if you're really going to go as far as to say that you hate her now?? Ugh @ people getting pets ignorantly...

Use a spray bottle full of water to spritz her when she gets on the counter. Yelling at cats isn't an effective way to train them. It frightens them, but they don't learn from it.

Hiding isn't necessary in fact why would you? It's the spray of water that teaches them, not whether or not it's coming from an invisible person!

If you hate your cat and you still have it, yes you are nuts. It is just a freeking cat for goodness sakes. Give it to someone who wants a cat and you will be better off. How lame do you have to be to ask a question like that? That is like asking "I hate it when I stab my leg with a big knife. Do you think I should stop doing that?" What do you think the answer to that question would be?

No you shouldn't- if you can't handle a CAT you sure as hell can't handle training a puppy.

I just don't want her to spread germs, shes walks in the litter box and the jumps on the counter, not sanitary

I don't allow my cats on the counters. nothing wrong with that. seriously, try a little water spraying. doesn't take much. they learn the rules when the consequences matter to them.

My kitten is rather naughty. I have a water bottle in every room so when we catch him in the act, we give kitty a good squirt and say "no". Just one word. He doesn't like it. Now he flinches and runs when you grab the water bottle. He still gets into things but he's a kitten, you have to expect some bad behavior.

It's usually not bad behaviour or being naughty, it's just CAT behaviour. Why have a cat if you don't understand they really don't have standards of morality, just what they want to do?

Do you know that no one is going to read this except me, you, and the op. And any people who might be stalking our profiles. So right now, you just come across as a little bitchy. Was that your intention?

And I really dont need your advice on cats.

Well that's a fair few people, isn't it? Why wouldn't it be read by anyone reading this thread? Not that I care really.

Is "bitchy" meant to be funny? Nothing I wrote was bitchy & I think you're being a bit over sensitive. I was merely pointing out that cat's brains are well known to work in a way totally different to dogs, who live to please humans: one of the things I love about cats is that they only want to please themselves, even though sometimes that trait used to drive me nuts when I had cats.

Many people get cats but don't understand that simple fact, that's all I was pointing out

Why point it out to me specifically as if you are imparting some great cat wisdom? You were doing what you do, making a needless contradiction. Perhaps I am sensitive, but you come across as combatotive. This isn't the first time.

This thread is over two years old, no one is reading it on purpose.

Yeah well I really think you're over-reacting: I didn't realise it was so old until after I'd posted and started getting responses. Sometimes I fill in time when I'm up late or very early because of ill health and IIN, among other things, gives me something to fill in time until I feel a bit better.

I realise I'm sometimes seen as combatative because I don't mince words, something that happens to a lot of us as we get towards the end of our lives, just not into beating around the bush unless I know someone is in a fragile state, which I don't think was the case here with an OP heading the post about hating his/her cat.

I didn't mean to upset anyone, just passing time and forgetting to check the dates before I posted, hardly a crime!
