Is it normal i hate those cop-out middle names?

I really, really hate those middle names that seem like easy, thoughtless cop-outs!!

No offense to anyone, because I have one of those middle names myself!!

I see it as such a waste. You have the opportunity to name your baby anything in the world, and it's a middle name for crying out loud, so why not be creative??

I'm talking about names like Lynn, Marie, Rose, Grace, Ann, Michael, Renee, Lee, Jo (or Joseph), Allen, John, David, Robert, and William. Those names can be fine as first names, but used as middle names, all they are is mindless filler!!

Do you hate them too?? IIN?

My Mom actually named us with the meaning of our names in mind.
My name means Christian Princess, my sister's name means Reborn Hero. My brother's is Aztec for the boy of fire and water. Her name means resurrection, which is pretty appropriate for her. Mine? Not so much.

I feel that a parent's name for their child is a blessing for their child. Ethan means one that is strong, and naming your son Ethan is a blessing that they will be strong individuals... Alexander means the defender, naming your son Alexander is a blessing that he will be a noble man with a heart for those in need. A name like Ethan Alexander? You get where I'm going with this.

So yeah, I see what you mean. You are given the opportunity to bless your child, and you should take it. Maybe this culture does not value such blessings, but that's just my opinion.

it's even better that a name meaning "christian princess" is ironic. i've noticed that anybody named christian, hope, faith, chastity, anything like that, are usually extra wild.

    • My mom gave great thought to our first names, all have very important meanings. Mine is religious, so is my bro's (an honor to my grandma's youngest child, she died shorty after), my other bro is 50/50 and he got Jason, which she thinks is magical because if you take the first letters of July August, September October and November, it spells Jason. Don't ask me why, I don't get it as far as naming someone goes, but whatever floats her boat.

My Mom also admitted that she got the idea for my middle name "Christine" because "Christine", the movie about the haunted car, was playing on marathon during her last trimester.

It was a great book, though.

I gave my daughter Noelle as a middle name, because she was conceived on Christmas.

If I ever had a son, I'm considering McLovin. That's it, just McLovin. No first name, no middle name and no last name. Just McLovin. Interpret is as you will.

I'm sure she is and Noelle is a beautiful name!! Still, I do find it strange that she was named after the conception date, rather than birthdate, which is more common for Christmas related names, right? On the other hand, I'm quite used to it, my first boyfriend had a very Christmassy middle name, that he hid for as long as he could from everyone who could use it against him. He was neither conceived nor born at Chrismas time. But his mother's name WAS Maria, if that matters.

If I had a weird middle name it would just be an inconvenience. I'd never use it and would feel stupid writing in on documents. If you don't like your name, change it legally. But I don't see why you'd encourage parents to scar a kid with an unusual name.

Parents might want to be different and individual, but most kids just want to fit in and having an unusual name doesn't help that. Maybe I'm just bitter because I have a very unfortunate surname :P

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • dalmationUntoyourSoul

unusual names don't really scar children. it's not like an alternative to sodomy, it's a name. the poster just wants people's parents to put some thought into it...

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • dom180

I have an unusual name, and was picked on for it quite a lot as a younger kid. It depends on the individual case if the kid gets any bad experience from it.

There's no need to get thoughtful over a name anyway; it doesn't change anything in your life apart from what you call yourself (which can be changed by deed poll anyway). If a name means "brave", that doesn't make the kid brave. Names don't affect your life.

Even if they did, what right does the OP have to advise parents on how to raise their own children? It's all just his or her personal preference.

        Comment Hidden ( show )

        • dalmationUntoyourSoul

OP has the right to advise whomever he pleases, and the parents have the right to not heed the advice. names are important to some individuals, especially in eastern cultures. i believe anything worth doing is worth giving thought and effort, so why should naming be different?

    • I didn't necessarily mean bizarre, I just meant put some thought into it!! Make it special, not just filler!! At least use a name with a meaning or purpose other than to bridge a gap!!

I feel insulted (mildly, I mean it's not like I want to kill my parents over it!!), I juts feel like 'why??'. My middle name has no meaning to them. As another poster said, they basically said 'yep, it was just filler'.

Why be insulted, even mildly? Your parents have, if they are any good, done a lot for you. A name is little to be insulted over. First names don't often hold any meaning either, so why should middle names? The concept baffles me :P

My middle name is Rose, and I hate it, too. Mainly because I have a cousin with that name and people think I'll become easy like her. I think common middle names (especially Marie and Lynn) are so tacky, annoying, and at least do something like Olivia Claire, or Kara Jae (which I want to name my daughters if I have any), or something pretty, like that.

My middle name is Ann. But my grandmother's name was Ann, my great-grandmother's name was Ann, and my mother's middle name was Ann. There are many Anns on my mother's side of the family. But even so, I guess that means it's a cop-out middle name, right? :/

My brother's middle name is Scott, but that's also our dad's name- it's a simple name, so does that mean it's a cop out?

I would much rather have my middle name be something simple like Ann- my paternal grandmother's name was Jacqueline. I don't think I would have like my middle name something so long.

I'm confused over why names like John, Rose, Grace, Lee, etc are "cop out" names for middle names, but they aren't "cop out" names for first names? Why is that? Is it because something like "John" or "David" or "Renee" aren't creative enough for middle names? Why can't the same be said for first names? Does that mean it's better to have a creative middle name than a creative first name? This confuses me.

When a guy says, "I didn’t get to fuck her because I reminded her of her little brother," he is making an excuse. If he says, "I didn’t get to fuck her because I’m an unattractive schmuck," he is copping out. The trouble arises when an excuse contains a small amount of self-incriminating truth." - George Carlin
