Is it normal I hate when people assume someones religion? Like you say something and they say "You must be a christian" or something else and they say "You must be atheist". When a lot of times its not even relevant to the discussion either. I sick of tired of people assuming religion on basic statements. Simple saying "I waited till marriage to have sex" does not mean christian. SOME PEOPLE WANT TO WAIT REGARDLESS! and simply saying "I like science" does not equal ATHEIST. I find it irritating when people do this and it ends up turning into a religious/anti religious debate.

I was once forbidden from praying before a meal, if I wasn't going to pray to the "Christian god." Then they offered a hand to me, and offered to pray with me. I chose not to eat that night. My family frequently assumes I am a "lost Christian" and I will return to the right path eventually. I'm a perfectly happy polytheist, however, and though my base morals were influenced by the teachings of the holy bible, I have no plan to return to it.
When I explain my morals, most assume I'm Christian, and while I'm not offended, it does grate on the nerves a little when they look at me like I'm the Devil, because my idea of the way the spiritual plane works is different from theirs. People tend to assume that those who don't think like them are wrong. Not many are comfortable with the idea that someone may not fit into the neat grid they have made for the world.

This is a common thing? You must not know very intelligent people if that is their only argument.

    I know what you mean.
You may find comfort in knowing that it's a sign that they have run out of arguments and want to steer the conversation in a new direction.

Let's not forget that old chestnut, "Oh, you're just a man you wouldn't understand".

Take it as a sign of victory. If they're too dumb or lazy to back up their assertions with credible evidence then they've lost the argument.

    • Since it happens all the time and I hate when people bring religion or lack of religion into everything. Its just like "I DON'T CARE!" As well as that people use it as a debate tool. "Oh you sound christian that makes everything you say invalid" when they don't even know if the person is really christian they just feel like bashing religion.

Generalizations exists due to commonality im sure you've made your social..etc whatever presumptions about things, however there are always exceptions

Basically you are arguing "not everyone is like that" well this kind of endeavour is rather pointless these stereotypes will continue to exist and people will assume them as such so theres really no point in being bothered by it

    • No its like saying I like KFC. "OH MY GOD YOU MUST BE BLACK"! See that right there is racist. Also assuming anyone waiting for sex is christian you are also saying anyone not christian is OBLIGATED to have sex before marriage? When did that become a rule?

Also using that as an argument is even worse. "You are christian so everything you say is invalid. You are atheist so everything you say is invalid".

That is like saying "You are black your argument is invalid since black people are stupid. You are Mexican so everything you say are stupid. You are white so everything you say must be stupid.". See? Does any of that sound right?

no it does not sound right

not defending such notions but you are just venting and blowing steam off established stereotypes, which is pretty normal. did u really ask the question for a sincere opponent and allow them to reasonably "clarify" or attempt to explain their point of view? Not likely.

So yeah, normal to hate stereotypes. and i can tell u were venting off cuz you said "you are mexican so everything you say are stupid" lol yes he are stupid haha yeah its a typo but chill dude

it just seems as if in reality in person suppose i would mindlessly without any malicious or hatred intent say something which you would interpret as the above, something racist or w.e geez the storm you'd unleash lol

        • Talking to people who use this defense generally ends in them saying how stupid that said religion they ASSUMED you to be is.

Its like saying "Your gay and gays and stupid not listening to you now yadda yadda" When they have no idea if the person is gay they just brought up gay as something to bash on.

Since you like musicals "You must be gay", you are a virgin"You must be christian", you like science "You must be atheist". When that's a large jump in conclusion from a simple phrase of "Well yes im over 18 and still a virgin".

Also I am not the only one this happened too. I have seen this happen to other. Than it turns into an Atheist, gay, straight, christian pissing contest.

Sooo, would you say that you have never made such an assumption, suppose a subconscious thought about a generalization on anything?

How can you guarantee or assume that you have not offended anyone with a sentence or wording choice of words you have said outloud, these person of course arguing the same thing as you.

            • No I do not assume things about people. You might find being a little open minded shocking but it does exists. I don't judge people unlike you might by race, gender, religion, or medical issue/disorder/deformity.

Also I am not the one saying these things. People assume these things from simple phrases right off hand. I am saying this type of attitude is idiotic. I am sorry I am not as prejudice as you. So get over it. Sorry my acceptance of people offended you.

If you are really going to be offended by people not being racist and prejudice I don't think a lot of people are going to have your back. Since most people do not like being made fun of for religion, race, and so on. Yet you clearly you think its something we should encourage.

Well, you said you hate when people assume one's religion.

I'm sure you get this a lot, and I don't mean to point it out, but it's just bugging me....

    Atheism isn't a religion.

I'm sure you knew that ;p

        • No Buddha was skinny when he was young and later got fat. I assume the same happened with Santa. We all get fat and old some day. Does not change who we are inside. Same thing happened to Elvis. Why we have fat Elvis and skinny Elvis. Maybe Buddha just ate too many pickled sandwiches.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
        • Nah, he was actually a fairly fat prince. Not 400 pounds fat, but still.

The skinny notion came well after to make him look less full of shit.
