It's normal. I like to scratch the inside of my ears with slightly worn down toothpicks.
It's a bad idea because as many of the users here have pointed out, you can damage your eardrums.
Not good, but, you're not alone. Lot of people stick things..Maybe not bobby pins, into their ears to scratch, dig out, or self-stimulation. I've used q-tips, like most people, sometimes matches, or sometimes pen caps. Not a habit, but, have done it. Just don't jab too deep or hard that you cause damage.
That sounds like a good way to accidentally puncture your eardrum. Its also pretty gross, and unsanitary.
