Is it normal i love and collect words?

I love words and have lists of words, notebooks, pieces of paper, sheets stuck to the walls of my house, etc. all full of written words.

So, I've been doings this thing for at least over 10 years now. Whenever I meet someone new, at some point, I ask them the question:

"What's your favorite word?"

It's almost like a test. The answer and reaction tells a lot about each person. Now I want to know from YOU.

The question to be answered is:

Do you love isolated words?
Which ones?
Why?

Yes! So many, I can't list all. (please try) 10
Yes. I have a few favorites. (please list) 19
Yes. Just one. (which one?) 7
I love words, but grouped together to communicate thoughts and ideas.  15
No. 11
Indifferent. 7
I hate words. 1
Words are stupid. 9
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

You have inspired me to list every single word I love, albeit several of them are in a different language. Before you interpret my attempt to list all my favourite words, you should know that I have chromagraphemia (a word unknown to several dictionaries), in addition to several other types of synaesthesia. Therefore, some of these words will be based upon colour.

    1. Words that are phonetically appealing: Insomnia, subito (Latin), opaque, muse, rustle, deranged, moon, lunar, mind, reward, complacency, dread, manet (Latin), iimus (Latin), rogat (Latin), arbore (Latin), paulisper (Latin), nondum (Latin), cauponam (Latin), voluit/noluit (Latin), sedimus (Latin), stare, stare (Latin), mashite (Japanese), gozaimasu (Japanese), dou (Japanese), excitare (Latin), scio/nescio (Latin), mox (Latin), rain, benvenuti (Italian), di (Italian), surreal, sorrow, ira (Latin), Cnidaria, and sovereign, just to name a few.

    2. Words that are synaesthetically appealing: Insomnia, pure, Zen, engorged, mud, ostentatious, mange, wrangle, suffocate, urine, dread, treasure, nomen/nomine (Latin), manet (Latin), domo (Japanese), arigatou (Japanese), Aoi (Japanese), drug, deranged, muster, read, owning, heart, sovereign, organ, rogat (Latin), Missouri, Delaware, quaint, forgotten, June, uxoris (Latin), mind, meningitis, diarrhoea, intimate, intrigue, fatigue, quest, hunger, fizz, fuzz, sister, nougat, nature, for, soar, frequent, understand, estimate, domum (Latin), dormire (Latin), fungus, gleam, soft, foreign, death, sorrow, ira (Latin), mox (Latin), iimus (Latin), fragrant, favour, trusting, itinere (Latin), animo (Latin), quiet, mesmerize/mesmerism, unam (Latin), duam (Latin), tres (Latin), quinque (Latin), desu (Japanese), amigo (Spanish), amo (Latin), zone, anguish, door, foresight, dissent, demand, rushed, hazard, marmoset, faerie, termite, finger, adjourned, rough, trough, thorough, Russia, German, moose, nothing, rusted, rotten, roots, heritage, orate, stream, faculty, the list could go on.

There are definitely more, but I just can't list every word I like. I'll be here all day if I do. Even so, I'd clicked the wrong option and said I only had a few favourites - Sorry about that. I never realized how much I truly loved words until now... Also, the word "pheromone" strikes me nicely for some reason. OH! And fancier words are always fun, like incendiary and provenance. :)

Well, I hope you had fun replying. I was definitely surprised and very entertained by your list. Many beautiful words on it. I'm curious to know why you know so many Latin words. No one knows Latin anymore. Disce Aut Discede. Haha

Latine dicere possum quod languam amo discere. Plus, it's useful to learn for scientific work. Latin is the second language I've ever truly studied, and now I'm in love with it. Yes, "Learn it or go away!" :)

I think it's impossible to hate words, because we all rely on them heavily. Reading, which consists of words, is encountered every single day in our lives. Hating words is a stupid thing to hate.

Nice poll, btw! I like a few words: fractal, abstract, surreal, line, blue, etc.

I like words that feel right in the mouth, where it has to move the way it would when tasting wine. The words Serbia, prodigious and Caravaggio are examples of that.

I like old words like harridan, and midden, and wold. And words that still belong primarily to someone else's language. Schadenfreude, portmanteau, carabinieri.

I like rare words that can only ever be used pretentiously and only as a joke. Metagrobolisation, mesonoxian, concupiscent.

I like slang, especially that of my blood. I won't include any because they'll make no sense to you. Even though clothing an idea in words can conceal the idea, rather than communicate it openly, they're still personal.

I like words that look pretty. Skara, willow, Zulu.

I like words with powerful meanings. Salvation, redemption, deliverance.

My favourite word combines pretty much everything I've talked about above (with the exception of slang). It sounds nice, is nicely derived, feels nice, is pretty, and its roots come from another language.

Its definition is the smell you notice when it rains after a long, dry spell, and the earth gives up a kind of fragrance.

    Petrichor.

So I'm always paying attention to cognates, falses ones, "borrowed" words and expressions from one language to another, etc. Anyways, you haven't mentioned one single word you like. Tell one that has interesting origin? Pretty please. :)

Ahhh, I can rarely remember my favourite words! I don't know why, I fall in love with a word and then poof, gone! I'm still trying to remember my favourite German word, it's been annoying me big time! I'll just list the words in my head right now:).

I like the way these sound:

    -actually
    -peach
    -apple
-I'm going to steal someone's username as a favourite too: taciturn. I love it.

I think that I like "ch", "a", "ee" sounds.

And now after reading everyone else's list, I want to steal some of their words, especially willow. My list is just really simple words, which is because my vocabulary is pretty appalling, and I'm a simple person:P. For that reason I kind of hate answering this question now, because there are so many words that I know I'll love, but I don't know them yet. Great post, though. I love words too:).

Edit: I forgot bloom:). And I like flower too:). And moonlight. And leaf. I think I like words related to nature. (nature is a pretty word too:P).

Oh, btw, what are your favourite words:)?

There are a few words I like that just sound cool, have an interesting meaning, etc.

    Here are some:
    -defenestration
    -flabbergasted
    -kumquat
    -whimsical
    -sesquipedalian
    -epitome
    and of course -verbophobia

    • Very nice selection. Whimsical is one of my very favorites, too! To me, it sounds similar to what it means. ;)
