Is it normal i'm non-religious and i get scared when..................

The majority of people around me are anti religious? I've asked this a few times and I don't think I've worded it good enough. Basically what I mean is I don't have a religion, I'd probably be considered agnostic since I'm not sure whether there's a God or an afterlife, but I used to be a Christian and whenever I saw an anti Christian sentiment I thought that it proved God was real because no one would be so hostile towards something that didn't exist. Now after finding out about the harm religion has done, I realize how ridiculous that is, but now I don't have a reason. There's cases where I simply said the word God and got downvoted and insulted, and I've used the Bible and characters as literary references and had people contradict me even though I didn't claim to believe it. I'm sorry for the long post, but if I were to go through every example it be even longer, but I'm really confused because if god doesn't exist than saying bad things about him
Shouldn't matter, and yet to me, an unbeliever, they do, and I don't know why.
