Is it normal i pick at my gums with sharp objects?

I pick at my gums when I'm bored, nervous, scared. Usually with my finger nails. When I first did it my gums would bleed but now they stopped. I've done it for about a year, I have really straight white teeth but I feel its really messing up my gums but I can't quit!!

I have done this since I was a baby. Well, I've actually managed to quit *mostly* many years ago. Just seeing the damage it does to my gums is enough to stop me, but I find the feeling quite addictive. I still dig in occasionally, in times of stress. I also have certain fingernails that I like to pick at in the same manner, but I've never stopped doing that. I don't know why some people do this or how to help you, but at least you know you're not alone.

Maybe there is a greater concentration of nerves in certain parts of some people's bodies because the feeling is kind of orgasmic. Not in a sexual way, but in a pain/pleasure type of way.

My gums used to itch so bad, I'd sit there for hours picking at them with toothpicks. Turned out, I was allergic to nickel and I had nickel fillings so when I got a nickel crown put in earlier this year, I was out of control. I then got all of my nickel fillings replaced and my crown replaced with porcelain. I'm cured! Maybe you have the same problem?
