Is it normal i think philosophy is bullshit?

Philosophy is pointless. I just want to punch every philosopher in the face, a kick in the groin, or a knife to the butt. I took philosophy in college. Wasn't impressed by the lack of logic. Socrates can eat me. Maybe instead of claiming he knew nothing he could have done something useful like cure malaria or something.

    How do you try to explain things we can't with logic?; or do you simply don't care about and live a life knowing you are stupid?

        Lots of philosophy is based in science though, it is just ancient philosophy that isn't. Modern philosophers, Bertrand Russell (Google "Russell's Teapot") being just one example, base much of their thinking in science.

        I'll admit that compared to modern knowledge those ancient philosophers were ignorant, but there is no denying how important they were 100s of years ago; just as modern day philosophers are now.

        Think of it like this: modern day philosophers work in conjunction with science, ancient philosophers worked in a time before the first ideas of the scientific method were even conceived (probably by a philosopher, for that matter). To apply the name "philosopher" to both groups of people is a bit strange in my view, as they are so different, so be sure to make the distinction between modern and ancient philosophy before judging the whole concept of it.

        • Thank you, that helps me a lot. I still don't see how modern philosophers are important today. It seems there is no use at all for them anymore. I'm actually taking a history of science class. The "scientists" would discover something...say fossils for instance, and it was up to the natural philosophers to come up with an explanation as to how the fossils came to be. It's pretty interesting but nowadays, it seems that science alone can answer the important questions that are asked by scientists. It seems philosophers are no longer needed.

            • As far as the scientist community goes, the word "God" doesn't even exist. They study evolution. You can sit there and ponder whether you're imaginary friend exists. It's not a problem worth looking into. As far as feelings, I forget what university is doing it, but they're actually slicing human brains nanometers thick in order to sequence the whole brain to pinpoint what occurs where.

    A lot of people think philosophy is bullshit, so I guess it's normal that you think that. Even though I strongly disagree with you on this one.

    Philo = love
    Sophia = wisdom

    Philosophy by its original definition and etymology literally translates to love of knowledge, therefore I don't see saying it's bullshit really applies when all philosophy implies is an attempt through reason to understand the universe. You can disagree with philosophies for certain, but that is not the same as disagreeing with the concept as a whole. We as people are always looking to understand the world better, and that in itself is a philosophy of sorts. ;P

    Also, wasnt it descarte who was all about knowing nothing? That in order to truly know everything you must first doubt everything you know and all that?

      To me, that definition is bullshit. There is no feasible way for anyone to understand the universe by using human reason. It is too vast and there are too many unknowns. So when I'm forced to read something some cuntbag wrote back in the 1600's about how he meditated and thought he figured it out and then realized he didn't figure it out, it makes me kinda hate living. Because now I have to wast my time reading this shit, and then get bored. Philosophy is important because it can be something someone can live by, a mantra. Philosophy is something that should be personal, otherwise what's the point of it if you don't figure out your own personal philosophy. The way it is taught today is boring and wasted on most people. At least where I'm taking it, there is literally 0 discussion and it is all lectures and readings. So as someone who was interested in philosophy, and took a class to see what was up, all I learned is that I hate it with a burning passion. That's why philosophy to me is bullshit

    Science involves understanding our universe through experimentation and measurement, while philosophy is used to determine what is logically feasible, Philosophy is also used to describe many metaphysical issues which science can't yet grasp. So it is important, it teaches us critical thinking skills and lends us a meeting place to debate our beliefs and ideals with our peers. Though nothing beats evidence.

    The question here would be ''what is bullshit?''. How can there be so much we don't know that we don't know? How do we know and not know?

    Well, I have a hard time voting on this one. Philosophy is human nature. we were meant to have our own ideas and thoughts, it's a part of what we are and it's kinda faded away over the last 100 years.

    I loved philosophy but I fucking hated my philosphy class.

    Every other assignment was "Is there a God?" "Are people good or evil" blah blah, eventually the repetition of reworded questions because so annoying that I started answering "No, Hitler was right, kill all of the retards".

    I got a pretty good grade on that paper.

    There's a book called philosophy who needs it. I suggest you give it a shot. Most philosophers are crack heads who live in lala land but there are a few good ones.

    The whole discipline of philosophy is not bullshit, it's the philosopher that is, or can be, full of bullshit. It's worth noting that philosophy isn't just a discipline, it is also an innate ability, that grows with you. Aptitude towards this ability greatly increases, when studying disciplines that require deep thought and logic, such as, the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, computer programming, and philosophy itself.

    I think it is normal to think that way. I used to think that way, and pondered as to why, then I realized the paragraph above. BTW the philosophers that are quite lovable and truly make amazing arguments, are usually the ones that have a firm background in the sciences.

    I find that when people criticize philosophy, they're usually criticizing metaphysics, which can be summed up in two questions: what exists? and what is it like?

    Thinking that science can answer all problems usually comes from the assumption that the natural world is all there is, as opposed to thinking something like justice or numbers exist elsewhere (Plato thought that the forms (circles, numbers, etc) existed outside our experience). Thinking that the world is only natural and that science has the power to understand all of nature better than any other approach is a philosophy known as scientism (very popular today, and we can see why).

    If you subscribe to scientism, then it makes sense that you would find some of philosophy's questions pointless, namely the metaphysical ones, since they seem to share a similar domain of asking: "what exists?" and science is already supreme in that domain.

    Yet philosophy also asks questions that many people do not find useless at all, and in fact are considered of the highest importance everywhere.

    In Ethics it's asked: Is it wrong to assist someone in suicide? Is abortion wrong?

    In Political philosophy: What is the best form of government? What is the proper place of liberty? Is it right to tax the rich more?

    These domains cannot be answered by science because science asks what is, not what ought, or ought not to be as political philosophy, and ethics does.

    Philosophy does heaps of other things as well though too, and it continues to innovate. Philosophers do sometimes ask questions that seem fruitless to the common folk, but you never know when they'll create something like economics, computer languages, political systems, humans rights, and science (Isaac Newton, and Galileo were considered natural philosophers in their day).

    It's normal to hate Philosophy CLASS , yes. I hated mine. I don't think it's pointless, but it's just not for me or the general population D: I'd rather reserve it for someone who can put it to good use, namely those intelligent nut-cases of society who are full of ideas and inventions capable of creating something extraordinary... Like Leonardo Da Vinci :D Everyone during his time thought he was nuts, but he totally showed them. Anyway, your own philosophies are not bullshit. You need to be able to understand the world you're in, and you're subconsciously inquiring about life everyday.

    To cut the crap --- Philosophy class = Yes, it's normal to hate it
    Philosophy in general = No, it's not normal to hate it. You need it!

    So your Philosophy is that it's acceptable to punch philosophers in the face, kick them in the groin and stab them in the butt?
    Since you are now a Philosopher, it is acceptable for others to do these things to you!
    Unfortunately, because your philosophy states that philosophy is pointless, there aren't any doctors to patch you up.
