Is it normal i've had it with this kind of comment?

Is it normal that users who comment on a "long" post only to tell the story teller that they didn't use paragraphs, spaces, punctuation, etc properly, or that their story is too long, ANNOY THE FUCK OUT OF ME??? Some posters apologize in advance for the length of the story because we're so used to getting those completely utterly useless replies.

For Christ's sake. Just get out of the post and don't say anything. Stop showing us you can't get over yourself and your inability to read shit grammar and help someone in need, even if they can't write it well. Usually if the story is long it's because someone has a long story they need help with.WTF is wrong with you people? We're supposedly here to help people with their questions, not their writing skills!

Asking people to write in a way that is readable is still helping them, albeit not with their original question. So long as you're not being rude about it I don't see what the problem is.

    • I tend to agree that it's beneficial to mention their writing abilities, I think it's a contribution to their lives in general. The comments I'm referring to are precisely the rude ones and that do not provide the OP with anything other than that, that are just complaints about the way they write or length of the post. Totally unnecessary. I've seen stories that had five comments and three were just that. For instance sot9 is one that does it, but at least he corrects in detail and doesn't just tell OP he can't help with their problem because of it.

sot9 doesn't necessarily correct things that need correcting. He takes words that are in common usage and easily understood by the general population and acts like they're incomprehensible. Or he quibbles over the use of suffixes.

His latest grievance is that the word 'girl' means a young person of either gender, and that someone cannot be considered a 'man' or a 'woman' unless we know that they have had vaginal sex more than three times. How does that help the OP?

        • Hahaha I must've missed that. He has, however, done more than what you just described. What I mentioned he's done less of, yet he's done it. Well, it was not the best example, I admit it. I absolutely didn't mean to set him apart as a role model.

Oh I'm aware he's done more than what I've described...he's also ranted about being Earth's embassador and voices only he can hear telling him how the world should be run...

But yes, I know what you're saying. He has on occasion actually been helpful. I didn't think you were saying he was the epitome of helpful comments :P I just had to put it out there.

The 'quality' of this site has declined rapidly recently. With that, comes more and more likelihood of people just responding to be unhelpful dicks.

            • The truth is I understand completely being an unhelpful dick, because I do that myself on occasion. But I am careful not to do it to someone who legitimately needs help.

        • The worst of what he does is dissect the meanings of words and reference their, ironically, archaic origins...

I pointed this out in another post, but my comment was deleted, either by the op or management...either way...I'm done.

Suckonthis9 is a truly awful example of somebody who is considerate of the person receiving their comment.

I mean, he'll say something sensible 1 time in 10, much to the surprise of everybody here. But that still means he's saying something utterly ridiculous 9 times out of 10.

        • Haha damn! I know it was an unfortunate example if you consider his whole body of work. I don't even think he was helpful at all when I saw those few comments in which he pointed out ALL of the OP's mistakes, I said *at least* he did it properly. My whole point is not him, it's anyone being an ass to OPs unnecessarily.

If this forum is about communication with others, doesn't it behoove the posters to be able to write intelligently?
It is so tiresome to try to figure out what point someone is trying to convey, when it would be so easy for the poster to turn on their spell checker and try, a tiny bit, to make their post legible?
There is absolutely NO excuse for bad spelling and grammar in this day and age. Shame on you for condoning it.

I would like to point out that as a person who goes on this site only by use of my phone, its easy to make typos and not even realize it. It drives me crazy when I get a spelling lesson over a simple typo.

    • I'm not condoning it, I'm talking about being respectful. If you've read my comments here I haven't said I'm against correcting anyone. Do it politely, though. Be sensible and be sensitive.

What a crock of shit; "We're supposedly here to help people with their questions, not their writing skills!" doesn't say anything about being respectful, it chastises those of us who would like to be able to understand posters.
I guess you don't even remember your own post. And you missed my point entirely, so don't go all preachy on me.

Personally I empathise more with the people who post these kind of comments than the people on the receiving end of them.

Sometimes, especially when you've been here a while, it's frustrating to see a solid wall of text. Excessively detailed, poorly structured and generally not-fit-for-viewing. It's irritating to even attempt to navigate those kind of posts.

If you want to ask a community their thoughts on a problem, be polite and conscientious enough to write it in a way that doesn't require a bloody reverse encryption manual to understand!

    • Isn't it simple to click "back"? It seems some people do that out wanting to make their visit worthwhile. "Since I clicked here, might as well make a comment (even if have nothing to say). Look, this is a pet peeve and I think some here deserve respect despite their walls of text. That's all.

They saw the length of the story before they read it. If they can't read long things, they shouldn't read them.

Personally, I can't breathe underwater. You don't find me leveling accusations against people who have swimming pools, though.

if you want a real answer it requires it to be readable, having a 3 page run-on sentence is not a post, its a mess. space it out in chunks so I can attempt to take bites out of it and read it all

    • It is still a post nonetheless, oftentimes with a real problem. That's like saying poorly written comments shouldn't be acknowledged either, in which case we would all be grammar gladiating in every post. My point is an OP shouldn't be subjected to that. It must be very disappointing to think someone finally answered your post (that might have been sitting for days until it got moderated) and when you get there it's just a rude comment similar to what you've just written. I still find it unnecessarily heartless. Empathy, dude.

There's nothing stopping somebody from deleting and resubmitting the question in a more manageable format.

This is a basically a public Q and A forum, and if the reason somebody didn't provide a constructive comment is because the question was horribly presented, they have every reason to say that.

Of course there are polite ways of delivering this, and impolite ways.

I generally notice the more rude ways on posts that aren't 'deeply meaningful', like "IIN I went shopping and somebody said I was pretty?!!?!?" Cue The Great Wall of China in text, without paragraphs. Rambling on and on and the title doesn't match the question if there even is a genuine question blah blah blah. Then people will say something akin to "Use paragraphs for fuck sake!" or TL,DR.

If it's something like "IIN I was abused?" - apart from that being a dumb question, it's probably a heartfelt post. People are more likely to be polite when criticising a horribly written question if it's about something emotionally sensitive. "Please use paragraphs."

        • Also, about resubmitting, people google if something is normal, think they've found a place where they'll find help, sign up and ask a question which takes a pretty long time (in internet-time 3 to 5 days is an eternity) to be moderated. So, yes, that would be an even longer delay for them to get a couple of answers, *if any*.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
        • As long as they have provided an answer I think it's fine. That's what I've been saying. I haven't made a generalization as in asking people to respect bad writing in any case. It's basically what you described. The reason I made the story was that I had just seen a very rude comment like those again in a serious story.

here's a thought: if those people bother you so much, ignore them!

isn't complaining about these people by making a post about them the same thing as them complaining in comments of posts about things they don't like? not very helpful either way, is it?

you think their comments are a waste of your time? because reading your post complaining about them has been a waste of my time. but I still took the time to respond with my true feelings on the nature of your post.

there's little purpose in complaining about things you have no control over.

just relax and move along. others will come and help the people in need.

  • I've had it with the lack of concision. They clearly need to be told because they have to write a small book in order to tell you that they like wearing shoes.

So go fuck yourself you complainer, you filth.

Long is not really a problem if it's well structured and you know where they're getting to. What I hate is when it's a random bunch of stupid unrelated sentences and you just realised you wasted time and it was tl;dr.
