Is it normal internet is now asking for way to much information?

Some accounts use to ask for your phone number, address, and real photo ID and name. We have always had those websites like Google. However it seems all majorly used websites are now asking for phone number, real address, real name, and a lot of personal information.

When did the internet decide that we do not have a right to be anonymous? I mean that's part of the allure of the internet isn't it? Why is it now that everyone decides to put us at risk by making us reveal EVERYTHING!

Now Facebook advertises current location, wants your phone number, real name. Yahoo and most other email sites are asking for phone number back up. I mean what if I don't want to give you my phone number, real name, and address. Anyone else noticing this latest trend?

Ever since Facebook. It ruined the internet. Since that asshole decided to take over, it all changed for the worse.

Facebook has caused people to get used to it and resign themselves to surrendering their private information to websites, to lower their heads and embrace authoritarian websites.

        • That would make sense. I refuse to give anything else though.

    (Second Part)

I'm yet to encounter a site that asks for ID. Most of the sites I come across only ask for email and username or name (I almost always use my professional or pen name when these pop up. When I first started my google account I gave them my real name, birth year, etc but no phone number. Big fucking mistake. I was under the impression that ANY of my accounts would only show my pen name but instead they showed my real name! So, I went through this lengthy ordeal of having to change my google account name. Huge pain in the ass that was but it worth it!) One of my current biggest problems with google is the YouTube changes. Yes, I detest the new layout but this is not about that. It's about their confusing "rules" on how to upload a video past 15mins. They say you can do this if you have a good standing on the site. Yet, YouTube is insisting that the quickest and best way to do this is if you give them your phone number! What if your account gets hacked? Then that "person" can get all of your information. It's disturbing. Something should really be done about this, like a protest.

(I'm going to have to post this comment in two parts)

I hate it. In the past, sites could be secure without having to have ALL of YOUR INFORMATION. What made it change?! I know that in some countries like Germany they have laws that protect people's right to be anonymous but I don't know if there are any limitations to these laws or specifics. (One of Germany's laws was brought up when they had the "Nym Wars")

    I agree.

I feel sorry for robots on the internet, they get discriminated against. Alot of sites use this "captcha" to prove you aren't a robot. You know, where you have to read the distorted letters in the box and type them as you see them.

    • I don't understand why they are distorted. Sometimes they are so distorted even a person could not figure it out.

I think they meant you should lie to the website.

    • You realize those are variations of the same question. I know you are trying to find something to pick at but you are grasping at straws. Just pick one. It does not make you look smarter trying to correct someone who did not make a mistake.

I've been noticing the same thing. Some sites just want your info for their own gain, others use the information for security. It's becoming more and more difficult to discern when and where it's appropriate to submit personal info.
