Do other is it normal users find some usernames so offensive they feel ill? I'm not going to give the trolls who use them publicity by listing them, but why do the moderators allow users to name themselves in ways which promote racism and brutal child sexual abuse?

I don't understand why the moderators from time to time exercise their right to remove certain posts they find offensive but not highly offensive names? One of these names makes me feel so ill that whenever I see it I have to get off the forum for the rest of the day: am I being oversensitive and/or are the moderators being inconsistent?

Posts are supposed to be "not blindly hateful or otherwise distasteful" - what about usernames? Aren't they part of the post?

    You're doing what they want but at the same time this seems more like a "you" problem. Are you really that sensitive to words which give a foul meaning when put together with other words? If so, IIN is not the place for you as it's the least of your worries when considering what overall happens on this site.

          This is one of at least 4 examples on this post alone where you responded to the wrong person, of you responded to a comment directed at another person as if it was directed at you. When you respond to a specific user is says at the top of the comment @that user. This particular comment that you are responding to was directed at dirtybirdy. I would think you have been on the site long enough to understand how it works.

            I have cataracts and find some colours and size typefaces almost impossible to read. However as far as I know I've been hitting "reply" on posts I'm replying to but then I can't always read my own typing either.

      It was being moderated until fairly recently because a very ordinary question of mine was disallowed with no reason.

      The internet is part of the world and I will respond to posts on here as I would remarks made verbally in my presence, at least until I get totally bored and give up on specific people which I'm getting better at as I get older

        The topics get deleted when someone reports the post and it goes into the unmoderated section, which is why ordinary posts are deleted for no reason. I have had several deleted as well. This problem has to do with the lack of moderation as well because there is no one around to keep people from reporting good posts.

          Thanks for that explanation. It all sounds very haphazard to me, especially as I had one question not approved, so it was never seen by anyone other than the moderators.

      Because words mean something, that's what they're for! It's the attitude behind some usernames which is the problem: I think I've made it perfectly clear earlier, but I will repeat it one more time. A username which is blatantly racist or misogynist or about brutal child sexual abuse betrays an attitude that it's ok to trivialise these issues. Not exactly rocket science ....

If you find it that troublesome why do you frequent here? There obviously is no moderating going on so the only solution I see is that if you are troubled by it to not use this website.

          I wasn't intending to be condescending. IIN is also full of thoughtful intelligent humane people with whom I enjoy interacting and I won't be giving that up because of a few morons. I do however reserve the right to confront such morons whenever I feel like it.

          It's not about "inappropriateness" by the way, it's about being offensive in a way that contributes to oppression and misery.

    There isn't much moderation here, only when posts or comments are reported. There used to be a filter but they did away with that. And you are only giving them pleasure by mentioning them! Interestingly enough, the user with these accounts has been pretty cool-headed and actually a bit funny lately. I couldn't help but laugh earlier when I saw the ShootAllNiggers guy had said "I love black women." I shouldn't laugh but I did at that, haha....

    Anyway, we should just try to get along and maybe we'll all enjoy IIN a bit more for it.

            Yeah I agree with you. Comedians shouldn't be joking about anything that might upset someone. What's funny about that? Nothing, that's what. We should band together and burn all of George Carlin's work in the street. Same with Bill Burr. Same with most of the other comedians out there.

            And what about user names? We need to have a better moderator. Someone who goes through all user names and posts with a fine tooth comb and deletes everything that could end up being potentially incendiary. Only politically correct posts should be aloud. I'm voting for Ellenna to be the next moderator. Better yet, I think you should be the next President of the US of A.
