Is it normal my dwarf hamsters are starting to fight? (both male)

Hi. I've had the pleasure of owning 2 Chinese dwarf hamsters since November. They are the cutest things ever. I'm obsessed with them & take great care of them. Their names are Peanut & RoRo (sister named her's Rosetta Stone for whatever reason -_- so I nicknamed him RoRo for short) peanut is the oldest. By how much? I wouldn't know. That's the one thing I shoulde asked. Although the lady who gave him to me to hold the first day said he still has to grow into his genitals? Which I didn't believe because his balls are all out lmao like full grown out. RoRo is a baby still. Very tiny & quite nippy. He's the stubborn one but he can be quite nice & calm when he wants to be. I assume both to be brothers or relatives because from day one they haven't fought & the longer I've had them it seems like if you take one out it misses the other lol.

ANYWAYS, moral of the story is that for the past 3 nights I've heard these weird squeaking noises that I've never heard them make before. Very loud & quite agitated sounding. For the first two nights I figured I was hearing things until now on the 3rd night I've discovered it was coming from them. I have them both in the same cage; one of those starter kit shits. I'm looking to upgrade them with a very creatively detailed & wide spaced tank once I move.

I was wondering if there's any advice? Verification that they are INDEED fighting? (I've not seen them PHYSICALLY fight, I just hear the sounds) & whatever else? Trust, I already know that they are gonna need different levels & spaces to where they can't fight & what not. Just looking to hear other input?

It's normal, yes, but if you don't put one of them in a separate cage/tank, you WILL wake up to find one of them ate the other one someday very, very soon. Hamsters are adorable, but very vicious. Never leave two males together unsupervised.

Love animals as I do even previously been the proud owner of a hamster I am no expert but my theory is: As they are both male they are fighting for position and dominance as all creatures do. If you put both of the same gender together it usually does end up with rivalry. I would say that you need to separate them.
I think it's fine to put a male and female together as it is very rare for a male animal to attack a female as they want to stay in their god books. I'm sure you get the picture. xx

  • Yes, you will need to separated them, or put them in a much larger enclosure so they have enough space from each other. If they are already fighting, which it does sound like what is happening (someone is complaining), then it will eventually escalate as the younger hamster matures.

Hamsters will kill each other. I used to work in a pet store and one morning I arrived to work to find about twenty hamsters all sharing a ten gallon tank in the quarantine room. Some fool working the night before, knowing nothing about animals, put them there like that. The hamsters had gone cannibalistic and were eating each other. They only paused for a second to regard me as they stuffed entrails in their little mouths. A few others had jumped into the next tank over which had a mother rat and her four babies; the hamsters had chewed the tails off of all the babies. Hamsters are cute, but they have a dark side.
