Yes; you can get a 1 modest 1 bedroom apartment where 1 or 2 people can live (and many do) in the range of $750. Either a shared bed or bunk beds (I've done bunk beds in this type of apartment before). Now I'm married so it would be a shared bed if we had to move and conserve $.
Its in an older building/house and does not have the latest amenities (will have cable and phone hook-up). Nicer and often larger apartments in newer building are twice that, or more.
My mortgage is about $535/month for my 3 Bedroom house (2.5 baths), with a full basement and 2 car garage. Its a nice house that was built very well in the mid 1950's. Premium house for its day - has an original cedar lined walk in clothing storage closet next to the master bedroom.
I did a fair amount of research on cost of living in a lot of areas in the USA when I was in my 30's and 40's; and when you also look at typical salaries decided that there was no reason to move out of the mid-west (effective take home pay is higher here than in many places).
I avoid living in the larger cities as they are at least twice the cost for housing. I'm in a modest sized city area, and can be in the larger cities in 45 minutes in different directions. Milwaukee is 1.5 hours away.
Something to think about for your long term future... The way to build wealth is to lower your cost of living while also keeping reasonable wages - and that can often be done by choosing where you live.
IIN my freind can not afford rent at 20$ an hour
